Started my first new build today - quick question
After I got the mother board installed with the CPU in place, the heatsink, the fans the memory etc. I want to power it up and check the chasis fan directions vs the PSU and the CPU fans and make sure that I don't have them working agains each other, rather that they are all sweeping air flow through the case nicely. However, I do not have my PCI express video card yet. Is it safe to power up the board without it?

If you really want to and not start up the mobo or other components. You can use this old trick..Look at your 20+4pin mobo connector, when looking at it there will be one green wire and about 5-10 black ones on it. To turn on the PSU you must connect the green one with ANY of the black ones. Either of the adjacent ones generaly are the easiest to connect with and are the ones I prefer. the connection can be done with a piece of solder or a paper clip put in the psu socket pins. Make sure its secure.
So you can only connect the neccesary fan connectors to test out whatever you so please. But I myself have never tried taking the video card out and powering up. In my opinion I dont *think* it should be a problem. But wait for a second word on this. |

Noob, the point would be this....
I spent a few hours on this thing today and will not come back to it until after Friday, when my video card comes via UPS by which time the build will be a fading memory. It would be easy at that point to install the card, power up and fry everything that I did today. SO, it's best to test what I have done today so that anything that will be done subsequent to todays progress will be like a new build again, and I waon't have to backtrack and worry about the little things. Like fan direction, wires in the way, proper air flow, you know.......the little stuff. I will be free to concentrate on the initial boot and the BIOS setup, the OS setup and so on. |

Just hold tight and wait.
You can do this. Look at the fans (usually) the side that exhausts is the side with the frame holding the motor/fan in the middle. The completely open side is the intake. CPU fan should already be installed correctly (provided you are using the stock HSF).
