Am I using the right Parts.

Ok, i am going about building a PC, first timer... lol so i have just bought the new Intel Extreme Edition Core 2 Duo chip awaiting it to be dispatched. Got the chip at a reasonable price, so bought, its the new Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X6800. Anyone know where i could perhaps get a ABIT MoBo that is compatable that i can set up RAID on it? So i would like to have all the components ready for it. I am shopping in www.Komplett.ie. so far here is what i picked out.

322567 Antec Performance One P180 Miditower, Black, Aluminum (Without PSU)
315160 Cooler Master Real Power 550W w/Power indicator, SLI, ATX/EPS, 20/24pin
317774 Creative Gigaworks T20, Retail
312204 Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic PCI, Retail
312370 Crucial DDR2 PC5300 1024MB CL5 Kit w/two matched DDR2 PC5300 512MB CL5
313160 Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3000, Keyboard/Laser-mouse, Retail, UK
320345 MSI P965 Platinum, P965, Socket-775 Firewire,SATAII,ATX,GbLAN,DDR2,PCI-Ex16
314090 NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Black OEM
318935 Samsung 20" LCD Syncmaster 204B TCO03 Silver, 1600x1200,5ms,VGA/DVI,800:1
320080 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
304874 WaterChill 3 1/2 HDD Cooler (With Fittings 10mm)
315127 WaterChill CPU/VGA/Chip Kit KT12A/T-12VS ,12V Pump, 120mm Black Ice Pro Radiator

What i plan to do is get 2 750GB HD's purely for storage and set them up that 1 is a back up of the other and this will be done by RAID, The Main drive will be a 250GB that will run windows and all the other prog's etc...
Also i plan to have it water cooled, so any input on this and if i have the right kit etc.
I also plan to get a 20" flat screen, and a soundcard/video card.
It will be only used for music and videos. No gaming.
So any advice or recommendations, i would be grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

I'd rather get a ASUS board (P5B/Deluxe or P5W DH)
You should get DDR2-800 PC6400 - or you'll hold the CPU back a bit.

Don't do RAID - it's a pain, and unless you are doing mirroring its a big data risk (one drive goes kaput, you lost all your data).

Also, water cooling isn't necessary at all with Core 2 - they run very cool. Even the EE.

What video card do you plan on picking up?

Don't forget an OS. Win XP Home (OEM if possible) is fine.

I am confuesd, i thought that was the idea of RAID was the one drive would be a back up of the other? is this not the case?

RAID 0 (Striped Set) - Makes multiple hard drives into one large logical hard drive. Downside to this is if one HDD goes kaput, you lose everything.

For home PCs, the speed advantages are only theoretical and aren't noticeable.

RAID 1 (Mirror Set) - Creates an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks. Identical HDDs are usually required. So basically, if one of the HDDs fails for whatever reason, the backup mirror HDD will jump in and everything will be in business still.

Either way, RAID is generally useless for personal use systems.

Whatever floats your boat. I personally wouldn't do a RAID setup if i was just using the system for music and video storage.

Just get two HDDs, set the primary one up with the OS and any programs you use. And just use the secondary HDD for storage. Chances of a quality HDD dying on you is not common and usually there are warning signs before it goes to allow you to backup the data.

I wouldn't use a Cooler Master power supply, they aren't really that good. Get a Antec, Enermax, Fortron Source, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Sparkle Power or Zippy instead...much better quality and reliability.

Ok bud delete that watercooling stuff from your list. Youve done so many things wrong that its just too much. If and when you get serious about watercooling Ill be more then happy to help.
1. waterchill is too be stayed away from on all costs. 2. That bip will be able to barely handle your cpu no way will it handle everything else. Until that a aircooling solution will easily outperform the waterchill. And will be 200 percent more reliable then waterchill's lower performing, overpriced, shaddy products.

And the only coolermaster psu I would ever is the extreme power series. Real power is decent but there are so many better psu's out.

Watercooling is totally unnecessary. Especially since your build is only for music and video. No gaming. Stock cooling is more than enough. Don't waste your money on it.

Also, like I said before, RAID is not necessary either. Just have a smaller HDD for your OS, programs, and stuff. And have a bigger secondary HDD for your music, video, and storage.

You can save alot of money by cutting back on some of your components. Its not neccessary since you probably won't even be pushing the computer to anywhere even close to it's limits.

When you said you are using it for music and video. You meant downloading music and videos and just playing them back for entertainment, am I correct? Or did you mean doing extensive editing of music and video, if so I was wrong.

Actually watercooling does come in handy for solutions like his where quiet is wanted. Just that the parts he chose were worthless. Otherwise stick to air.

True, but quiet can be achieved with air cooling too. Maybe not as good as watercooling, but definately way cheaper.

True dat. Its made for 3 kinds of people. Overclockers, Ultra silence users, And overclockers + silence users. Or just enthusiasts. Otherwise air is more then enough.

I don't see a video card in there - but that kind of work does not require a high end card. With that in mind, you could get an Antec Sonata II case, it comes with a high quality 450 watt PSU and is a very quiet case. It has a cooling duct over the CPU that will help quiet stock air cooling down.

On the RAID issue - if all you want is to have a backup in case something happens, why not just use an external drive instead? It's a lot simpler. Sure, a mirrored pair protects you against a single drive failure, but it does NOT protect you against any file corruption!

You might need a floppy drive, that board comes with the Intel raid drivers and the Silicon Image SATA Controller RAID driver on floppies.
Don't forget the Operating System XP home w/SP2 will be fine unless you need some specific feature of XP Pro or want the Media Center Edition.
As far as the sound card, the motherboard has pretty good 8 channel sound already that you might want to try before you get a card.

Just so you know - Newegg doesn't ship outside the US, or if you are just provided Newegg links for our reference. My only concern is that you get the right revision motherboard. It requires 304 to work with Core 2 Duo. Have you confirmed with the vendor that they do infact carry the 304 board?

It should say this somewhere on the box.
Model: Intel D975XBX
Part#: D27094-304

Revision 304 is what you need.
