I'm not so sure about that video card. I would just use onboard video, make sure to get a video card with it. But honestly, with a budget so low, I would just get a pre-made computer from Dell or someone similar. |

1.) ECS is a bad motherboard to go with. Find something made by ASUS instead.
2.) Wrong processor. If you want to go with AM2 you gotta find a motherboard that has the AM2 socket. 3.) Throw out the PSU in that case and get a quality one. Antec is a good one to go with. Find one with ATX 2.x standards and over 450w of quality power. 4.) For the HDD, you might want to go with the more modern, SATA or SATA2 (Serial ATA) hard drives. 5.) As for the video card, look into the more modern, PCI-E (PCI Express) video cards. Since your parents only use the system to do light work. Find an ASUS motherboard with onboard video. This should be more suitable. Last edited by minsonngo; 08-03-2006 at 02:35 PM. |

Here is a good basic build. This build is great for light to medium tasks. You can modify it to suit your needs or price range.

Look at this board instead. Better brand than ecs and has onboard video.
Wrong ram for a 754 board, you want regular ddr, not ddr2. The am2 processor won't work either, you need a 754.

Uhh... the processor he has is AM2. If he wants to go with that board, he is going to have to go with a Socket 754 processor. Plus he will need to get DDR-400 instead of what he has listed, DDR2-533.

I really do think you would be better off with a low end dell.

I'd suggest switching to one of Antec's cases - one with a 350W or 450W PSU. THat thermaltake isn't suitable for a PCI-E build. Sorry, you can't get a case *and* a PSU for $24
I too agree a low end Dell might be the better route.

You don't build a low end computer to save money - you build it to make it the way you want with quality components. If it's totally cost driven, get a Dell. I haven't seen anything in this thread yet that really impresses me.
