Really annoying beep

Hello. Last night I built a PC. I figured everything out, and put everything together. However, when I tried to boot it up for the first time I got a really loud high pitched beep that kept going. I've looked online and listened to their advice. I've put the memory back in, put the video card back in, and made sure that all of my wire were put in the right spot. Still,I get that beep. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should try next? Thanks.

Follow all of the steps in this thread, which entails building the bare minimum outside of the case. Also, post your system specs so we can help interpret the error code you are hearing.

If you have an AWARD BIOS:

Repeating beeps = memory error, double check and make sure your memory is installed right, you can try reseating them. If that does not work, try one stick at a time or try installing KNOWN working sticks into the system.

Repeating high frequency beeps = CPU is overheating, double check and make sure you have the heatsink/fan installed securely and working. GLC usually tells people to install the heatsink/fan onto the motherboard OUTSIDE of the case so you make sure it snaps on correctly. Also make sure the CPU is making good contact with the processor and there is the right amount of thermal compound between the two.

Repeating High and Low beeps = Dead CPU, all you can do is replace it.

AMD Athlon 3400+ Processor
G.Skill Value 1 GB RAM

sorry to sound like an idiot, but I'm doing what the first person posted, and I have everything done except fopr the last step. I'm a little confused on what I have to do to connect the power switch to the motherboard outside of the case. Can you explain?

Just take a screwdriver and momentarily touch it to the two posts on the motherboard that would normally go to the power switch. That will turn it on.

Ok, I did that. I still got the same screeching sound. It lasts for about 5 seconds now and then all the fans stop spinning for about a second. Then, it just does it again and again.

Is it the high-pitch high-frequency beep or is it the high/low alternating beep?

Are you sure that the heatsink is on correctly?

It is just a single high pitched beep, it doesn't alternate between high and low. As for the heatsink, I'm using one from an old CPU so it's reused and doens;t have that stuff on the bottom anymore lol. So, this is actually my first time building it with a heatsink that didn't come with the processor. I'm using the heatsink from my old 2800

That's the problem: you need either the thermal pad or thermal grease between the processor and heatsink. Is the heatsink even compatible with that processor?

Do not turn on the computer again without the heatsink properly installed; otherwise, you could destroy your CPU if it hasn't been fried already.

You can get it at any computer store or online. Shouldn't cost more than $5 or so.

Ok, so let me sum this all up. I need the grease or it will keep making that beep. And my processor may already be fried? Crap. Just two things.. What is the stuff you put between the heatsink and CPU called exactly so that I can know what to ask for at the store. And you don't think that the heatsink for the athlon 2800+ can work with the athlon 3400?

It is thermal compound, thermal grease, thermal paste...just say any of them and they will know what you are talking about.

Is your old processor an Athlon 64 2800+ or an Athlon XP 2800+? If the heatsink was for the 64-bit processor, then it should work.
