New build, no power

Hi everyone,

I have just built a PC with the following:

Antec Sonata II (450w PSU)
AMD Athlon 64x2
M2N-SLi deluxe
2x512mb Corsair DDR2 RAM
NVidia Geforce 7600GT
2 x Maxtor 250gb 16mb cache

Finished building it last night, connected the power and hit the rocker switch. The green SB_PWR light comes on on the motherboard, but there is no other indication of power.

So I trawled the forums and saw the sticky here about removing the mobo (great instructions by the way). I took out the mobo, reconnected the cpu and heatsink, RAM, GPU and monitor, 24pin power, 4pin 12v power, PSU fan power and CPU fan power, very, very carefully. I then shorted the two PWR_SW pins on the fascia connector bit and still nothing. Just the green light on the mobo, no noise from anywhere.

Unfortunately my old PC's PSU will not work with the new set up and I don't really want to shell out more money on a PSU if it's the motherboard.

If anyone has any more suggestions or diagnosis help that would be great. By the way, I do have a little "multimeter" and electricians screwdriver if that would help?

If a picture would help, let me know and I can post one.

Thanks!!

A Digital Multimeter? Very nice device to have btw.

It seems to me like either this could be a dead motherboard or bad powersupply.

This is probally not the most safest thing you can do, and could risk killing another pc if your psu is truely the one thats bad. But trying that psu on another computer would give conclusive results.

It could just be easier to rma the motherboard. As im suspecting it more.

And you are SURE that nothing is being shorted?

Yeah, pretty sure nothing is being shorted, it is on a large piece of cardboard on the floor with only the power cables near it. I now have the world's most expensive little green light

Thanks

Ok, I switched off my OLD PC and took the door off. It only has a 20pin power strip whereas my new one has 24. 4 of the pins are detachable so I took these off. I took the old power connector off and stuck the new one in. I did nothing else.

I got the same thing as I have with the new mobo. Green light but no power, no CPU fan spin, nothing. Is this proof that the PSU is faulty or did I not do the test correctly, like do I need to take everything off the old PSU similar to the "cardboard" test with the new PC?

Take the power supply and completely remove it from the case. Connect an old hard drive or something to one of the Molex connectors to apply a load, and also connect a case fan to one of the Molexes. Take a bent paper clip and shove it into the main ATX connector to bridge the GREEN wire with one of the BLACK wires. Plug the power supply in and hit the switch. The fan should start. If it doesn't, it's a dud power supply.

Tried that and it's a dud power supply, popped down to my local Maplins and bought a new 500w PSU. It's a beauty

PC now up and running, well in BIOS anyway Thanks for all your help!!

Why don't you contact Antec or your vendor for a RMA replacement?

The reason is I am too impatient to wait for the replacement

I will try to get a refund but it might be difficult because of the case/PSU coming together. May be I could get a part refund......I will call them and see what they can do for me. Customer service isn't usually great here in the UK but you never know!

Hope you do stick around. I've been working around computers for a long time, but I love this forum because I still learn knew things about computers here that I never knew before.

You will not get a refund or vendor exchange without returning the whole case. Antec MAY exchange just the power supply, that's about all you can do.
