***The $500 Gaming System

Okay here is the deal:

My cousin's birthday is coming up near the end of this month. He likes to play PC games like WarCraft, Counter Strike, Half Life and the like. I made a little extra money this month and would like to do something nice and suprise him with a computer for his day.

My budget is $500 OR LESS. Monitor, mouse and keyboard are already taken care of. I have a system in mind, but I am curious as to what others can come up with. I want to thank everyone who inputs ahead of time. Your time spent is appreciated.

Dang... I didn't think a computer could be squeezed into a $500 budget that was made to play games... one problem though. Tack on $90 for XP Home, and your already over the $500. Also, it wont cost any more money, replace the Samsung cd drive with a Lite-On one. Good ol lite-on.

Hey thanks cuog! Everything looks pretty good except for the PSU, I think I probably will be needing a stronger PSU than just 400w.

Also is the G.Skill memory pretty reliable? I know AM2 is still buggy and it is very picky with the memory you use.

This is what I came up with, let me know what you all think I should change or not.
Or if I should just trash it all and go with something else. Thanks again everyone for your input.

see if you can find that same case w/o PSU so it can save you a few dollars G.Skill seems to be a favorite at the extremeoverclocking forums so i guess it will serve you well. i myself am still on the s754 platform so i dont know too much about DDR2

Sorry I forgot OSs cost money, Linux has made my wallet happier in that way

You can buy Microsoft home for CHEAP on Ebay.

See if you can snag a copy on Ebay before his birthday.

One of my older setups with AMD Athon XP 1800+, 1GB DDR266, and some cheap AGP 4X ATI Radeon 64MB video card runs Counter Strike: Source just fine for me too.

I thought that Corsair kit was cheaper, so I scoured a bit, and it turns out I was wrong. For $6 more initially ($106 vs. $100 after shipping), you can pick up a Crucial Ballistix 1 gig kit with $30 rebate.

So if you submit the rebate, you spend $24 less than for the Corsair kit, but in the short run, you only pay $6 more.

A lot of universities offer free or discounted software, but what few people realize is that they're paying for that privilege via a standard "technology fee".

Good find on the memory deal Stuey83! Thanks! One thing is I hate is rebates though. I think most of them are shady. You buy the item and send in the rebate, they tell you it will take what? 6-8 weeks or even longer, they don't send it to you and by that time you probably have forgotten about it already and never get your rebate check. Or if you call in and check, they lie and tell you they are missing something that you will need to send it in but since the rebate deal already expired, you cannot get your rebate.

I agree with the "Technology Fee" deal, thats all the more reason to take advantage of the cheaper software!

Rebates do require some effort, but they usually work out in the end. Another thing I do is photocopy everything.

But yea, I know that many people hate rebates, but in this case, the crucial kit is $6 over the corsair valueram kit, so worst case senario, you pay $6 more, best case senario, without too much of a hassle you spend $24 less.

The case and PSU you chose is $87 combined, plus shipping from directron. I'd suggest seeing if you could get an Antec combo kit instead. The Sonata II is also a decent case/PSU kit, but a bit on the costly side. The CoolerMaster Centurion is also a good case (comes w/o PSU), and can be had for about $50 or so.

Compare Newegg prices on cases with ZipZoomFly, b/c ZZF ships for free while Newegg will charge you $20 or so.

Nah, I live 5 minutes away from Directron. I can just pick it up in like 30 minutes after I order it online.

350W is the requirement for the video card. So either a 400W or 450W would work fine.

I would not recommend Ballistix - too many compatibility and quality control issues. The 939 is very forgiving, Corsair value ram works fine.

Got that right. I'd love to do this for some of my cousins, but that's not going to happen with a big family. Great thought tough.

hey minsonngo, remember me? it is your long lost...cousin... my names... "hopeless"

lol, what a great thing to do for a cousin. I almost feel like asking you for your family tree so that I can try to make a connection to your generosity lol.

I will keep some of these parts written down in case I decide to build something similar.

Haha.

Got one problem with the new build. His parents are worried about him using the system for the wrong purposes. Is there any FREE or CHEAP software available to do things like block access to certain websites, limit the amount of time he can use a program or the internet, and things like that?
