I have just built a new PC for a friend and everything works fine appart from the HDD.
When teh computer boots it goes straight to a screen saying "windows did not run correctly last time how would you like to start? Safemode, Safemode with Networking ... ect" no matter what I select it just flashes the Blue Screen of Death for 1/8th of a second then reboots. To recover the data I instaled teh drive in my computer but my friend has protected their documents (through microsoft, not a third party tool . Is there any way I can 1. Repair teh boot sector so teh drive will run normaly or 2. Get to the documents and recover them Thanks for any help you can give Nuke |

To see what the BSOD is, go into the BIOS and disable "restart on errors".
Are you using a hard drive from another computer to boot up the new computer? If you are, you will need to do a repair install.

flanzig, there are no bios settings that control the reboot on error. It's a Windows setting. If it's XP with SP2, this can be turned off on the boot menu screen though.
Did you reuse a hard drive from another system for this new build? If so, you have to do a Windows repair reinstall - procedures are in the Tips and Tricks forum. You can take ownership of the documents when you install the drive in your computer and recover them. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421 |
