Is dual core worth it?

I'm thinking of building a new computer sometime soon (next couple of months) and was considdering Dual Core but had a couple of questions.

I use demanding programs alot, Photosho CS2, Premeire Pro 2.0 Web design software ect. But I don't multi task, so would getting one powerfull CPU to do the job be better that having two lower-powered CPUs?

Power is irrelavant when your comparing a dual core to a single. To put it simply, single cores are of the past, dual cores are now, and quad cores the future. Not only is it not cost effective to buy a single core right now, but its just not smart when you have something of such higher capability for a few bucks more. Dual cores are worth it, demanding programs are making a very good use of them and more and more programs will take a even higher advantage by becomig multithreaded in the future.

The arcitecture's are totally different and are not comparable by a simple 2x1.5ghz=1x3ghz. You will see a large perfomance increase with a dualcore versus a single core even in normal applications.

Photoshop uses MultiThreading which means that both cores of a dual core would be utilised, resulting in better operation on a dual core machine than on a single core, more powerful CPU.

It is also likely that new applications will be designed for use on dual core machines so in my opinion it would be a good idea to go Dual Core

Well, its not only these multi-threading programs that give you an edge. Its multitasking, too. I noticed a difference right away! I could go on the interent with stuff still loading in my taskbar.

So, pick yourself up a Pentium D, or if you have a lot of money to spend, get a Core 2 Duo.

yea, if you aren't really worried about single core or dual core... you should go amd right now. AMD can get you a very cheap processor right now because of intels new chips coming out. You should go dual core without a doubt, however, my first priority is usually my wallet... and AMD is looking very cheap.
