Hi, I'm starting to rebuild some PC's that will all be P3 processors. I'm starting the machines with the XP Pro cd already in to do a fresh install. On two of the machines they start up fine but when they get through the PCI device listing a message comes up saying:
NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart What does this mean?

You need to put the CD first in the boot order.

Tried that. It says no emulation. Does this mean the CD drive is no good?

Tried different cd drives with no success. I should say that i'm a real newbie to building PC's. I think I've hooked everthing up correctly but could be wrong. The first two I did worked out perfectly and are still working flawlessly, these other builds are going marginally. I wish I knew what the error message means - NTLDR is missing.

The only time I get a NTLDR is missing is when I have a floppy disk in the drive. That may be the problem. When I first had that problem I busted out laughing.

Try swapping out the IDE cable for another one.
Are you sure the CD drive is jumpered correctly? Make sure the IDE cable is seated securely at both ends. |

That was my next thought, I'll try swapping the cables and retry the jumper settings. we'll see what happens.

The bios may be too old for proper boot CD support, the CD drives themselves may not properly support booting, ot the boot CD's are burned with nonstandard boot emulation.

O.K. How would I update the bios if there is no O.S.?

Usually you can flash the BIOS from a Floppy Diskette usually.

Thank you all. There was no floppy in any of the drives. I just went back over everything and made some small changes and now all 4 machines are working perfect. Although one seems to hang at times. It is the only one that has a Celeron 807(256 ram), the rest of them are all P3(750mhz or higher). What's a better CPU - Socket 370 PIII 800(797) or Celeron 800(807)? Is there a thread that dicusses this? I haven't found anything(I know we're talking old stuff here but...).
Overall I'm very happy that these machines have been saved from the landfill and I can give them to people who don't have a pc and/or just need it for internet access and simple tasks. Last edited by pozidrive; 08-22-2006 at 08:48 AM. Reason: Change face |
