Unhappy New build won't turn on

Okay, yes, I am a newbie but we must all start somewhere. I decided it was time to update my computer so I went ahead and bought the following new components:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

eVGA 7600 GT SLI

eVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

I already own two gigs of Crucial Technology 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) and a 400 Watt Antec PSU so I just lef that intact.

Now, I connected everything. The hardrive is connected to the the primary IDE as well as the DVD ROM drive and my Zip drive are connected ot my secondary IDE. I've go the 24 pin power connecter in as well. I correctly put the chip on the mobo along with the fan connected with power supplying it. The only thing that I think I have could have messed up is perhaps messing up with the 6 pin connecters because when I go to turn power on all I get is a red light on my mobo. Am I missing something or what? Help greatly needed.

What about the square 4 pin auxillary power connector?
Is that plugged in?

Double check the power switch connector. A red light dosent mean "bad" some mobos use red lights to inform us that it has power, some use greeen (ex: mine uses red).

So does the system even power on at all? If it does, does it even POST?

What is the model of the Antec PSU you have? For your setup, you will need a ATX 2.x PSU with the 24-pin main power supply cable and the 4-pin square ATX12V cable.

Double check and make sure you have everything (cables, memory, jumpers, etc.) installed properly. Reseat them if necessary.

If you are unsure that you hooked up the power button, reset buttons, and etc. from the front of the case to the motherboard correctly, you can try powering on the system by shorting out the pins for the power switch on the motherboard using a screw driver to see if it will power on.

It is usually good to have only the necessary components hooked up together OUTSIDE of the case to make sure everything works as it should FIRST. Then once that is confirmed, you can go ahead and install everything inside of the case. Double check and make sure there are no loose power cables, screws, unused motherboard standoffs, or any other foreign object SHORTING out the motherboard.

Yes, the 24 power pin connecter is in and yes so is the ATX 4 pin connector. Here's a small update:

When I hold down the power button FF will flash on my mobo for a moment as well as my CPU Artic Cooling fan will turn on for less than a second. Afterwards it just shuts off. Now, as an experiment, we took out the new mobo and put back in my old Asus P4P800SE mobo and plugged the cables back in. When I went to turn it on it did the same thing -- there was a light indicating the power was on in the motherboard and the CPU fan would turn on for less than a second. Now, I've tried removing the battery to clear my CMOS but that didn't do anything either. Could my PSU be burnt out? Need help ASAP.

I would try another PSU to confirm. The 400w Antec is a good PSU, but you may want something with a little bit more juice for you rig.

I don't really want to buy a new PSU, especially since the 500 one I am looking at costs nearly $200. Could the Dual Core processor really be using so much watts? It can't be the graphics card because the 7600 GT requires the same minimum watts as my 6800 GT did.

There's no need to spend $200 for a... 500w PSU? A big favorite PSU is the Antec TRUEPOWER 550W. It's $90 though. You don't even have to spend that much money for a quality PSU, you can spend less.

What monetary unit are we looking at?

So, that *is* a 24 pin power supply? (not a 20 pin)

Regardless, instead of getting a new PSU I am just saying that the new video card required the same wattage...so does that mean the new processor needs more watts than my Pentium 4 3.2ghz HT?

Also, my PSU is two years old...does it have to have anything special to support a PCI express mobo and PCI express graphics card?

If the PSU is 2 years old, your gonna need to upgrade. You need a 24 Pin 2.0 PSU. That 90$ Anted spirit mentioned will work fine.

If it doesn't have beefy 12V rails, then there might be issue. I believe AGP drawed off the 5V rail, so power supplies of it's time were beefed up there. PCI-E draws off the 12V rail, so PSU's for PCI-E have beefy 12V rails (sometimes twice older, similar wattage parts).
