New Build Problems - Video Card?

Today I obtained the rest of the parts needed to complete my build. I couldn't wait to get my new Core 2 Duo system up and running (I dream of a fast computer, I've been raised on emachines :P). So I built it, and then it was the moment of truth. The power-up. LED's came on, fans spun (All of them, including the GFX card's.), but no image appeared. The monitor was hooked up to the computer (through an adapter, my EVGA GeForce 7900GT doesn't have DVI)... so is this problem a graphics card problem? I only had one spare GFX card in the house, an old fx5200, but that couldn't seem to fit in my mobo.

I don't think it's a PSU problem. It powered everything else, and it's an Antec TRUEPOWER 550W.

If anyone could offer any help, I'd gladly appreciate it.

EDIT: Some observations. When I power up the computer, it powers up for a little, then kinda resets itself and stays powered.
I hear no BIOS beeps. Do I need speakers to hear them or something?

The FX5200 must be an AGP card - won't fit in a PCI-E slot. I think there are PCI versions to, and that would work in your PCI slot...

Anyways, you need a case speaker if one is not integrated onto the board. Might try hooking up regular speakers to the onboard video for giggles. I think some boards will spit out noises throug there.

Hey, I have the EXACT same problem you're having. I was searching on the internet to find a solution and I came to your thread.

The computer would turn on, but you can see the fan whin up for 2-3 seconds, then stalls/turns off/resets, and go back on again.

I have no way of telling that the problem is. I have looked into the rams, the sata cables, the 4V, the card itself...everything. I even looked at all of the jumpers to see if they were at default settings.

This build is a

Core 2 Duo E6300
ASUS P5B
2 GB Cosair DDR-667
XFX 7600 GS
Antec Sonata II with 450W PSU

I notice a lot of our parts are similar in brand, maybe this is a common problem?

Anyways, OP plz reply if you know what is wrong.

Thanks.

Whoa! That's weird... we have the same problem. Does your Video Card put an image up on the screen?

Wait a sec.. is this your card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150166 If so, it's AGP, and the P5B doesn't have an AGP slot..

Absolutely nothing is displayed on the screen. The little light on my LCD doesn't even turn green.

I read somewhere that some ASUS P5B mobo have an "out dated bios" and we must get a bios update (a total pain). This doesn't make any sense becuase I thought the Conroe works on all 965 platforms.... :/

I'll keep you posted as well but I find anything, but it has been a long day for me.

edit: It is PCI-e... unless the box came with a different card.

Yeah. It's been a disapointing day when the computer I've been waiting for doesn't work and I have to wait more.

I'm probably gonna call ASUS tommorow. I'll see if I can get any help, and maybe get that new bios if that's what fixes it.. I'm just sick of waiting... For Core 2 to come out... then for it to ship... etc, etc.

Well, the ASUS support page lists BIOS 0201 being the required BIOS for EVERY CPU on the page, including C2D. Taking a peek at ASUS' download page, I see that the latest BIOS version, *is* that required BIOS version. It would seem the BIOS version isn't the problem, unless they managed to ship and older version, that doesn't appear to be compatible with *any* CPU! Still, it wouldn't hurt to give ASUS a holler and see what they have to say.

Have you guys tried the out-of-case build I linked to (sorry I didn't mention what to do with the link)?
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

That would be the first step.

Yeah, hook your headphones up and see if you get anything (not sure if it will or not).

***I recommend you get the memory on the ASUS QVL list. These new board may be a little picky on what memory it wants to take. Here is the link: http://www.asus.com/999/download/pro...79/1179_10.pdf

It should still take any DDR2 RAM.

Yes, it'll take 800/600/533 DDR2

There is Corasir on the QVL, but not the exact modules....but, this platform isn't nearly as picky as say, AM2.

Final Lazy has Cosair DDR2-667. but on the QVL list under DDR-667, there is NO Cosair modules on that section.

Spirit has OCZ DDR2-800, this also does not on the list.

If you read the reviews on this motherboard at NewEgg.com, there are some people that suggest you use memory modules on the QVL list. One guy had OCZ memory and he is in the process of returning it for some other brand on the QVL.

This is just a suggestion. I may be completely wrong though.

Ouch.... if that is the case, then I might have to wait a while until I get my current rams exchanged. THATs if the store even allow an exchange.

I seriously hope the ram (or any of the hardware) is not an issue.

On the side note, I see that when I turn on the comp, the power LED would on, but the HD LED won't. If that is anys new to anyone.

You've probably got the wires for it switched. Flip the plug around.

Did anyone try the out-of-case build yet?

I wouldn't rule out memory incompatibility either. I guess it is still a bit early in the game to say how picky the 965 chipset will be...

See if you can get a stick of memory on the QVL list I linked to, to try out in your system.

Bad News: ASUS said I'd need a BIOS update, and the P5B DOES NOT have a Removable BIOS chip.

ASUS, you have let me down. It's time for a DS3!

Do you think that I may have the same problem? I have a Pentium D 915 and the same Asus P5D motherboard, and I can't even get it to POST, no beeps no anything. I am even trying this with just my mobo, cpu fan/heatsink, ram and eVGA Geoforce GT7900.

You can't download the BIOS update from the ASUS website and FLASH it yourself?

Did they say why you need the update?

They said the current BIOS was incompatible with Core 2 Duo.
How can I flash a mobo that won't even POST?

Anyway, what would be a good Core 2 mobo to get? I've already started the RMA process, I'll be mailing it to Newegg tommorow.

Definitely just get a new board if you can RMA this one... That smells fishy to me, I wouldn't want it in a new build...

That board should support Core 2 Duo. Its says so here: http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...3&l2=11&l3=307

Did they say you can send it to them and they would replace or update it for you? Otherwise just return the board for some other one.

Sure, the box SAID supports Core 2 Duo, but it DOES NOT without a new BIOS update, from the words of an ASUS customer service rep. I have started the RMA process in Newegg, because I don't want to go through the hassle of sending in the board to get the BIOS update from ASUS (which they said they could do.) I just want a new mobo, could anyone suggest one that's Core 2 compatible?

I'm looking at the DS3.. but it seems some people had problems with it: Some people had to RMA it muiltiple times... another said it didn't work with Cas Latency 4 ram (I have that).. others say it doesn't work with non 1.8v ram.. I have 2.1v ram. The big problem is, I am on a budget, and a lot of the 975x boards are just too expensive. It seems the DS3 is the only mobo within my price range, and I am very unsure about the compatibility issues.

Since my processor is Pentium D 915, my problem is most likely something else then I guess. Unless this motherboard does not support any 64-bit processors right out of the box...

If what you said is true, this has to be one of the worst false advertising in computing history.

I am outrage. I chose ASUS over Gigabyte because of their reliability.... ::jokes::

Hey. I'm RMAing my P5B. I was wondering if the P5B Deluxe would be a good mobo. I found one for a nice price ($201.99, beats Neweggs $250, and it's from the same site that I got my CPU from).

Also, I had to remove the CPU and HSF when I had to take out my mobo to RMA it. Theres still some of the old thermal grease on the CPU. Should I buy some new thermal grease for when I get my new mobo?

Oh, I found it on xPCgear. I trust them because I ordered my Core 2 there on Monday and it came on Thursday, at an okay price.

But that's not that important. I just want to know if the P5B Deluxe is a good board :P
