I built my own pc about 6 months ago and about a weeek ago I tried to upgrade some parts, one of the things I wanterd to do was to add an extra hard drive. My motherboard supports sata I. I figured it woudl be an easy task, just put it into the machine, plug the connectors and it should work. Well the thing is the new drive worked perfectly, but the old drive is no longer recognized by the board. Even when I unplug the new drive, and plug only the old one, the computer won't recognize it! I have gone into the bios to try and find something, it's set to autodetect. I've ran out of ideas, I know I must be doing something wrong. Thanks in advance.
O by the way, both drives are SATA II. THe old one has a jumper slot, which seems to limit it to SATA I. I know it worked well without that before, but I even tried setting that jumper and trying to boot with only the old drive, but it doesn't work |

Are there 4 SATA slots on the board? If so, 2 of them probably will require a driver since they run off of a different chip (this is usually how it works I think.)
Also, are either of the drives recognized in BIOS when they are used in the first SATA slot by themselves (the other drive disconnected completely)? Make sure you have both the power and data cables plugged in.

Today I was installing a SATA drive and the computer would not see the drive. I thought what could be the problem. Turns out the Sata cable was a dud. I replaced the cable and it worked like a charm. Sometimes don't overlook the obvious.

Ok. Yes the board has 4 connectors. I can't really remember right now because this happened about a week ago. I am going to try it right now just to be sure. SO what I am going to do is plug the old drive in the first slot, right?

The motherboard is an AA8XE. The uGuru cod ethat's displayedis 9.6. and 8.3
Ok so what I did was I unplugged the new drive, and plugged only the old one, on the first slot. It didn't recognize drive. So I reversed everything, plugged the new drive again and now the computer will not even boot! I don't know what to do anymore. The uGuru cod ethat's displayedis 9.6. and 8.3 I tried doing different things and I know that what's keeping the compuer from booting is whe I plug the power for the new drive. What I mean is, if I unplug all the HDD the computer boots. If I plug the old drive, it boots, but I doesn't go on to widnows because it doesn't recognize it. If I plug the new drive, it doesn't boot. HOWEVER is the power cable that's not letting it boot. I tried switching it to another molex connector but nothing seems to work |

what kind of power supply are you using? If your old drive was working and now its not then is it possible that something got corrupted? Try booting the windows disk and use the repair console to fix the boot sector.

No, you don't understand! The fans don't even start if the molex connector is plugged into the new drive. I mean I have a much bigger problem now!

You aren't trying to use both a molex *and* a sata power connector, are you? You can only use one or the other. If you connect both, you will damage the drive.
