the protective covering was still on so i don't believe so. it seemed to hit on its edge. i swwear it was like a slow motion movie scene where the hero gets riddled with bulllets.

Here's what I would do: Closely examine the bottom of the CPU insuring no pings are bent or broken. If none are, you should be fine. What processor is it?

Hal is talking about the pins on the motherboard that you connect the power button on the case to. You take something like a screw driver and touch the two pins on the motherboard that control the power switch and it will allow you to power on the computer without hooking up the case to it.

What are your system specifications?

Could you give some specs of your system? That may make it easier to diagnose the problem. What mobo model, power supply, etc.

Did you plug in all required power connectors?

The 20 (or 24) pin ATX power connector, and the 4-pin (2x2 square) Alternate 12V power block?

Some PCI-E video cards also require a third connector (a 2x3 block) before it will function.

ok i will look into that. in the meantime i've removed the sink and checked te pins on the cpu so i'm guessing now the thermal pad is compromised huh...

i've connected power to an eatx 12v on the mobo.

vid card doesn't appear to have any alternate power connectors.

still no display.

got display!

Not sure if this board is picky or not, but you might want to try a stick of memory from the QVL list to make sure it is not the memory: http://usa.asus.com/100/download/pro...79/1179_10.pdf

Or it could be that the BIOS version on the board does not support your CPU. I know someone else on this board had a similar problem. They called ASUS and they were told by the CSR that the board didn't have support for the CPU as of yet.

Lord only knows. I unplugged and reseated everything, fiddled with monitor a bit. Probably a combo of both. Thanks for the input, I'm at initial boot up phase now and will probably have more q's.

The 6300 is running at 50 C under no load in bios setup. Good? Bad? seems high maybe? Perhaps this is the answer to my earlier question about the thermal pad.

That may be a tad high - load up some monitoring software and check it under full load.

I have been watching the monitoring program that came with the mobo over the past couple hours while setting up windows and installing drivers etc. Temp has been hovering around 48-51 C.

Is there a recommended program or utility for loading the cpu to see where the temp goes?

Seems a bit high for an idle temp. You sure you got the heatsink fully snapped in?

Try a program called CPU Burn

http://users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn/

Make sure you run two instances of it so you load up both cores. Keep an eye on the temps, if they get towards 70C stop the program.

thanks for pointing out that program, blue.

i suspect it's a combination of the seating of te sink and my having broken the thermal pad after initial melt to check for broken cpu pin. one of the pegs doesn't seem to want to stay in after my having removed the sink from the board previously.

i'm thinking i will invest in an aftermarket sink/fan, as i'm sure i will want to do some overclocking anyway in the future.

arctic silver 5 is the gold standard for thermal paste it seems. what's a good cooling solution? i hear a lot about zalman and ninjas...

You can buy replacement pegs from Intel if you have a damaged one that won't snap all the way in and lock. You will void your processor warranty if you use anything but the Intel heatsink/fan and the provided thermal pad. You can buy replacement pads from Intel too.
