NTLDR Missing
I'm trying to boot from a Windows Xp Pro disk on a formated HDD and every time I boot I get the message:
NTLDR Missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart What exactly does this mean, and how can I solve it? Most sugestions on the internet are based on booting teh HDD into the OS, but i this case the drive is formatted. Thanks for any help you can give |

i dont think you can boot into "nothing" if you know what i mean. you have to have an operating system installed. you should install windows XP pro by booting into the CD. configure your BIOS to select the CD-ROM as your first boot device |

sorry, I phrased it oddly, I'm trying to install XP Pro on the formatted drive. I've set the BIOS to use the CD-ROM as the boot device and that is the error I keep getting.

Make sure the cd rom is set as the initial boot device and you press a key when prompted to. You will know it is loading from the cd when you get a screen showing files being copied.

I've worked out why it wont install from the CD.
no matter what key I press it doesn't resppond. I've tried two keybaords: Micrsoft Ergonomic 4000 (Wired) PC Line Wireless neither of them have any effect, but teh computer recognises them becuase capslock and numlock ect still light up when pressed. Any one got any ideas why this would happen? I thought it mght have somthing to do with IRQs, but I don't know enough about them to work it out. |

That's a usb keyboard. It should work if you use the older style keyboard that plugs into the PS2 keyboard port

Yes, but I can dig out a converter if you think that'll help. I didn't think it had much effect, esp. conssidering I have total controll in the BIOS screen.
I'll give it a go and post the results. |

I 'm not really too sure, I'm fixing it for some one bit off more than they could chew when they decided to build it themsleves.
from what I can see: AMD Athlon 64 3*00, 939 Socket (I know its not up into the 4000 range or and lower than 3000) Buffalow PC3200 400Mhz 512 RAM WinFast PCI Express Motherboard (Onboard graphics for now but have a Graphics card waiting to be installed) Western Digital IDE 40GB made in March 2002 (No speed markings) Hurcules 400W PSU LG CD-ROM 52x Speed LG DVD 16x Speed Both the Drives and the HDD are roughly the same age but the rest was bought a week ago. Sorry I can't be any more precise Thanks for the help |

Nuke,
Take a look in the BIOS to see if anything there is preventing the keyboard from working during initial bootup. At this point it is where I would go looking. See if Legacy USB is enabled. Do you have the motherboard manual?

Yay! Just went and "borrowed" a keybaord from my neighbor, PS2 works, as long as its normal PS2, not a conversion from USB. maybe it has somthing to do with a lack of USB2.0 drivers untill XP SP2 has been installed. I don't know.
Thanks for every one's help in this, I'm really greatful. May have to start a new thread as this entire setup has had a problkem every step of the way. but fingers crossed! Thanks again |

Great news! Once I finaly got XP installed everything works smoothly! As long as nothing goes wrong when I'm testing and benchmarking the components I think the saga may be at its end!
BTW Rave, I was in Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur last year, you got some great places over there! |
