Before we can help you we need some specifications of the hardware you used, most importantly the motherboard, processor, ram, power supply and the case.
Do you know how to do an "out of case" build?

here are my specs:

processor: E6600, 2.4 GHz

Motherboard: ASUS p5b

RAM: 2gb, 667 mhz

case: PowerSpec (I bought it at a local store)

PSU: ANTEC TPII-550ATX RTL

GPU: VGA XFX 7900GT 256MB PV-T71G-UDF7

for the out-of-case build, i saw the post on that. should i try it?

Definitely. It's the only good way to isolate a defective part.

Also, since you smelled smoke, closely examine all the parts looking for any scorching or discoloration.

i tried the out-of-case power up, but it didnt work. i touched my screwdriver against those 2 metal prongs but nothing happened. also, i took pictures of my processor because it looks like it might be burnt: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/boo545...?.dir=/99e7re2

edit: i posted on another forum and those guys said that this isnt the problem. so what else could it be? my psu? is there any way to make sure that it is?

yes something is fried so you will need to carefully examine your parts for damage. If nothing works when out of the case then something is toast. Check the power supply, ram, and motherboard for signs. Did you have the cpu heatsink properly installed?

Your processor looks fine. The gray on there is just the thermal pad from the heatsink.

Newer systems are programmed to shut off if it reaches a certain temperature. So your processor should be okay.

Just do the "out of case" build with only the bare essentials and see if it will power on and POST.

If anything is dead it may be your PSU or motherboard.

i tried the out-of-case setup but it wasnt working. i decided against pursuing this too much because i dont want to accidentally destroy another component. this is my first time so i dont know all that much about this. i gave all the parts to a local store who will hopefully be able to identify the problem. thanks for all your help though.
