It usually takes people about a few hours to build, configure, and run a new computer. Obviously for my computer, it's been weeks.
Status: 1. My CPU and CPU Fan are installed on my motherboard. 2. My Power Supply is installed. 3. My Motherboard is screwed in my case. 4. My RAM is put in. 5. My Video Card and Sound Card is put in. 6. The Jumpers and Power pins are all set, the Fans are also plugged in. 7. My DvD-ROM Drive is screwed in with power and IDE Master Cable plugged in. 8. My Hard Drive is plugged in with power and SATA Cable. 9. Power Supply is connected to all parts inside. 10. I put in my Windows XP OS CD. 11. BIOS confirms I have my DvD-ROM and Hard Drive plugged in and ready to use. 12. I configure BIOS to check for bootable CD-ROM instead of floppy. Now here is the problem, while it's searching for the bootable CD an error comes up. "MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLES" 'PLEASE INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE" I don't understand why it dosn't run my OS CD and creates an error. It should auto run it and install the OS, i've checked lots of forums and this problem still goes unsolved, who will step up and take the challenge. I've done all I could and i'm about ready to go crazy. |

Try another IDE (ribbon cable) to the optical drive.
Make a 98 boot disk, boot into DOS, change the directory to the drive letter of your optical drive and see if you can view the files on the Windows disk. Are you using an original Windows CD or a copy? If you put the Windows CD in another machine does the GUI appear on the screen? Can you post a list of your system components and especially how many sticks of ram are you using? Besides the monitor, keyboard and mouse, do you have anything else plugged into the machine?

Go here www.bootdisk.com download and make one on the machine you are on now. If you have a floppy drive in the faulty machine, make a bootable floppy it's quicker and easier.

Is your CD/DVD drive set as the first boot device in the BIOS/CMOS setup?

Do you have your drive jumpered correctly? Try setting it to CABLE SELECT.
Try clearing your CMOS/BIOS. |

Clearing CMOS/BIOS as in restoring to defaults? If I did that then it would want to boot up with a floppy, and I can only use a CD.

What model is your ASUS DVD-ROM drive? Usually most drives have jumpers where you can select: MASTER, SLAVE or CABLE SELECT.

That drive should have a set of jumpers where you can set it to CABLE SELECT. It is the group of 6 pins to the left side of the IDE port on the back of the drive itself.
Here is a picture of your drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...+SV+%2D+Retail See where the blue object is? Move that jumper if it isn't already to the CS (cable select) position. I don't know if it will help, but it may. |

I just went through a bunch of the supposed bootable cd downloads on the bootdisk site and all of the wanted to first create a floppy and then create the bootable cd from the floppy.
Have a read of this page instead http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/cdromsi/ |

Hmm
![]() I burned all of that to a CD and the auto run is still not working. The thing won't boot and tells me to insert system disk. I don't even know if it's checking the dvd-rom drive or not because it's not booting it . It seems to be a bootable CD to me...

Do you want me to go out and buy floppies. I have a floppy drive on this computer so I can put stuff on it. But on my new computer it dosen't have a floppy drive. I'm thinking of creating a boot CD from a floppy.

OK no worries but don't use that thing get rid of it.
Try downloading a copy of the ultimate boot cd from here www.ultimatebootcd.com this is a boot cd that is full of diagnostic utilities, burn this as an ISO and see if it will boot, if it does it shows your optical drive is working and you can run a few diagnostic tests from it. |

For the boot disks from bootdisk.com, you have to download the exe, then run the exe to copy the necessary files onto a 1.44 MB Floppy. Don't just copy the file to the floppy

WinISO is asking me to create a bootable image from a floppy. I should have just bought the crappy floppy drive.

Yeah but I didn't get a floppy drive for my new computer, I was thinking I could install the OS and all my hardware on a CD-ROM drive. It should work since all my stuff came with CDs and no floppies what so ever. I think it's my CD because it's about 5 years old and kind of scratched up.
