First Custom Build

This is my first time here, so be gentle. Im trying to build a nice pc on a budget. I suppose i'll cut to the chase, here's my list...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&sku=D15-2026

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=MBM-K8U-3300A

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&sku=ULT31690

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...sku=TSD-300M16

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=P725-3052

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=S457-1017

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=P450-8503

Just tell me what you think, give me some advice, etc. Also...Im new to this whole world, so I need to know if programs designed for intel processors will run just as well on an AMD Athlon processor? Thanks.

please put the names of the parts next to the links so that I can review it quicker.

I looked at the first link and that case looks neat, but I would not trust the cheap power supply if you are going to have a gaming computer at all.

got a power supply in there? the power supplies supplied with cases are, 99.99% of the time, something you would NEVER want to use to build a PC. they are just generic PSUs, ive seen them burn out on people a ton of times often taking vital PC components down with them...not worth the risk

look for psus by antec, enlight (thermaltake), theres other good brands cant recall offhand tho.

My apologies for not listing details next to the links.

Its actually not inteded to be a gaming pc. ( I just like the way it looks, im not really much of a gamer) Im going to be using it for Music Production.

As for the power supply, I need something thats not too expensive yet reliable, and after attaining this advice I think I'll stick with the case but simply get another power supply to put in it. Approximatly how much does this Antec psus go for?

I suggest you look into a dell. For the price, you will get parts of much higher quality.

I have actually looked into dells, but I want something customized...something that feels more personal. I have considered buying a dell, and just taking everything out and putting it all in a customized case. That way I still get the satisfaction of puting it together myself, and its cheaper.

Give us a budget and we can put a music production box together for you with QUALITY components from a QUALITY vendor. Plan on a M-Audio sound card. That stuff you picked is either junk or overpriced or both.

I'm going to recommend Intel for that kind of work, by the way.

I would really appreciate that.

I would spend preferably around 8 to 900 dollars, but certainly no more than 1000.

Thanks again.

as for the PSU, once you get a list of components together im sure someone could pick out a reliable one strong enough to power whatever components you want as well as leaving soom extra room for upgrades/additional hardware. the price of a good PSU varies. mine was something like $30.00-40.00, but i only needed a basic 300w PSU.

Well $800-1,000 is not a bad budget to work with. I would go with a dual core Intel processor, (Pentium D or Core 2 Duo would work find), 2x512mb RAM (check motherboard for correct speed), an Asus motherboard, a good sound card, and a decent video card. I highly suggest you just search around Newegg.com. There you will learn about all the parts currently available to you, read customer reviews, and check for compatibility. Post back with some things you found on Newegg for some feedback.

Prices are approximate.

Case: Antec Sonata II, $110
Motherboard: Asus P5LD2-VM DH, $110
CPU: Pentium D 915, $140
Ram: Corsair Value Select 2x1gb DDR2-667, $170
Sound card: something from M-Audio, I'm guessing around $100
Hard drive: Seagate 320gb SATA, $100
DVD burner: Lite-On, $40
XP Home, $90

This is under 900 bucks, the onboard video is decent, it has a PCI-Ex16 slot for an upgrade, the case is very quiet, cools efficiently, and has a high quality power supply. If the motherboard is hardware rev 2.00G, you can even upgrade to a Core 2 Duo. I speced 2 gigs of ram on general principle.

I'd like to defer to Sonic Vanguard for the exact sound card recommendation for music production.

Ive heard good things about the revolution series. Only reason I keep to these blasted creative labs is due to gaming .
