New AMD Gaming rig ($1000)

Hi, ive been an active reader of PCMech forums for a while now and ive been lookin around for a possible build in the near future.

Anyways, im plannin on making a new computer in a couple weeks and i need help starting off.

My budget is about $1000ish with a monitor hopefully unless it would be a good idea to add a little extra for something cheap that would be beneficial.

Goals for a computer
- gaming (mainly Lineage II, Warcraft 3, Battlefield 2, Oblivion and all the other new games comin out)
- music/movies/entertainment

Preferably AMD i guess coz people said that was better. But im taking ideas for both.

Hopefuly this comp can last me a good 2 years or more? I dunno. Just lookin for the best build for the price.

I dont have anything besides a mouse/keyboard pretty much so yeah. Everything else should fit in the budget hopefully. ty

Anyways, if any can help me out, pls gimme some ideas. Thanks.

Hmm... well with a $1,000 budget a dual core AMD processor is a good idea. Search around Newegg.com and come back with some links of things you like.

How about this configuration:

Motherboard: Asus m2n-e
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131022

CPU: 4200+ x2 skt AM2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103747

Memory: XMS2 1gb kit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145566

Hard Drive: WD SE16 250gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701

Video Card: eVGA GeForce 7600gt
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130283

Case: Antec Sonata II (PSU incl.)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155

Optical Drive: Samsung DVD Burner OEM w/ Nero
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151118

Operating System: Windows XP Home
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102059

Monitor: Acer 17" LCD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009088

Add to that some speakers, mouse, and a keyboard, and you've got yourself a very good system.

The total price was: just under $1,000. You can pick up some speakers, a keyboard, and a mouse for cheap. Probably < $30.

The motherboard that newbuilder suggests seems to have some slight memory problems, but make sure you read about them in full and know what you are getting. It will still work and perform exceptionally. The motherboard also only has 1 pci-express slot, so you wouldn't be able to do crossfire/SLi in the future on that board, but, if you got a beefy graphics processing unit, you should be ok anyways. The 1 gig of ram is a great way to start the rig, and adding more later is a good garauntee that your system will last quite a long time.

It looks like a good build from what newbuilder suggested. I have put together a list of parts for myself that uses this motherboard instead, which you may want to look at. The chipset is inferior to the board mentioned above, but, you won't notice a difference in performance one bit.

AM2 is picky about the memory. If you go with modules listed on the QVL you will be fine.

People say that the Corsair XMS2 modules work fine.

imma buy my rig at christmas prices and hopefully take advantage of over $100 in savings. A lot of my stuff may change, however, I am going to get similar parts.

I worry about not being able to run DirectX 10... like for Vista, but who cares if modern cards can't do it (which I don't know if they can or not) WinXP and Win2K are just fine OS.

well thanks for the ideas. However, a friend of mine suggested i get at least 2 gigs coz the game i play Lineage II supposedly has a really big memory leak. But ill probably try a 1gig for now and worry abt 2gigs later. (unless any1 can suggest a good 2 gig ram with a price range close to the 1 gig of ram suggested)

Also, back then i asked the same questions abt a computer. Someone suggested that i hold of on a SLI/crossfire rig for now especially coz this will be my first build ever.

For someone new to building computers, would this be a good idea?

So ive come up with this build.

Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100106L Radeon X850XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102688

Case: Antec Sonata II (PSU incl.)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155

Monitor: Acer 17" LCD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009088

These are pretty much the suggestions from Pacman and newbuilder. I just merged it into 1 for my future reference.

any other changes needed?

SAPPHIRE 100154L Radeon X1800XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102698

The Antec PSU you picked out is a good deal.

You will be fine with either video card you choose.

Get 2 gigs of ram, and downgrade the processor if you need to keep the same price. Based on personal experience the extra memory will make a MUCH bigger difference than a few hundred MHz of processor speed.

Ok, im thinking about changing the Processor and ram, heres what i got.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16819103735R

and for memory,

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145587

is that good? still comes down to about $1023.93 which is ok. Im sure that $23 will make a big diff right? If any1 has any other good suggestions on a better deal on Processor/Ram lemme know ty

If you go with Socket AM2, you will need DDR2-800 memory, NOT the DDR-400 you have listed.

Something like this:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590

$218.00 ($178.00 after $40.00 Mail-In Rebate)

I see no problems now. Have fun with your new build!

Oh, for the processor you have the OEM version. But the link you have takes to me to the Retail one.

Stick with the Retail one, it will come with the stock heatsink/fan and a warranty.

I dont want to burst your bubble but for gaming the new Inter Core 2 duo's and better than most of AMD processors. But it is up to you what you go with.

Lets not start an arguement between Intel and AMD again. Both are great processors.
