Is it AMD or is it me?

Just put the parts together for my first build ever. Despite install the fan on the processor correctly, it starts up at 55 degress and quickly shoots up into the 90's before the cpu eventually powers itself of, in my assumption because the processor is running to hot.

What's the deal with this? The only odd thing I can think of is that I couldn't put the cpu power plug into the spot for it on the mobo because the mobo is 4 prongs and the plug is 3. So when I go into the BIOS it doesn't even recognize that there is a cpu fan, although it has the "extra" fan running at 2700 rpm.

I mean I've heard of stock heatsink/fan being bad, but unusuable? This is really annoying.

What brand and model is your motherboard? Please consult your motherboard manual for the proper way to install the CPU.

You probably don't have the heatsink/fan installed correctly.

That connection is called PWM. DC and PWM are cross compatible, meaning you can still plug the cpu fan in.

And thats the reason why your cpu is being barbecued. You must plug that fan in. Without it the stock heatsink has no purpose.

Why check the motherboard manual?

It just gives the same directions as came with the processor when I got it. The only thing I didn't follow in either was plugging the power into the fan slot on the mobo because it is physicaly impossible.

Motherboard

Processor

Those are what I have.

Im telling you, they should be crosscompatible. Just make sure that little protrusion on the motherboard connector lines up with the indention in the fan connector. If not then just use one of the other normal 3 prong motherboard connectors.

You shouldnt even be running the pc with that fan off.

Ok, I feel stupid for that, but it didn't fix the problem lol.

I switched the plug to the fan one, and I just sat there watching the PC health, shoots up to 100 degrees and turns off.

The fan is on, I see it moving. And read the post I mad just before this one. Even when I had it in the wrong socket the fan was on.

Is the heatsink fan even spinning?

Are your sure you have the heatsink/fan installed snapped in securely?

Did you remove the plastic covering over the thermal pad on the heatsink before installation?

I definatly took the cover off. I'll go unsnap it and snap it back on again but I'm pretty sure it's tight.

And yes.....again....I see it spinning lol.

It is best to do the heatsink installation outside of the case to ensure it is mounted securely.

Most likely, your overheating issue is caused by improper installation.

Crap.

Ok, it was nice and secured before I started today, but when I went and checked it was kind of loose and I actually took it off.

Does this mean I have to go and get a totally new one? I'm guessing so considering I see the residue and stuff so I'm assuming it won't stick.

Or can I just go get something like this
and put on the same fan/heatsink that came with the processor?

I did install it outside. I think I may have loosened it putting it in the case. It was all kind of a daze lol, judging by the two cuts on my hand I didn't notice I had until I was done I think it may have went rougher than I thought lol.

If you did install it correctly it would not have come off.

If you use the some other aftermarket thermal compound or heatsink/fan, it will void the warranty on the processor.

If the original thermal pad is still okay, try reinstalling the heatsink/fan again, and this time make sure it is locked in properly. Please read the manual again if you need to.

Here are some good videos that may help: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...8^6678,00.html

I am assuming that you are probably installing an AMD CPU. My Athlon XP 3000+ is a very hot CPU. My CPU Temp runs normally at around 55 deg. Cel. And that's with a Volcano 9 Fan running at full speed (5300 RPM). I also have thermal paste (Artic Silver) Highly recommended for heatsink/processor installation (The thermal tape isn't nearly as good at removing the heat). On mine, I placed the thermal paste on the Small CPU part of the Processor Chip (Use sparingly). Been running everyday for a few years. (Ever seen a film of what happens if you don't install the fan on an AMD CPU? The processor catches on fire, literally!)

OMG thank you guy for your last response lol.

I just re-installed the heatsink/fan and turned it on for about 30 seconds. Consistent 24 degrees celcius. I would've kept it on longer but I need to be happy even for a minute lol.

Funny part is, IDK if it's because the directions are bad or I broke it, the little lever thing used to secure the heatsink is in the opposite direction of where the picture says it should be lol.

Ok people, new problem lol.

Before I realized my processor was running at 3 times normal tempature, I tried installing Windows XP.

It went to the set up screen, and then loaded the cd. But now when it goes to the set up screen it gets stuck on "veryfiying DMI pool data"......it never does anything after that pops up, just sits there.

Did you try booting from the OS CD, repartiton and reformat the HDD, and then reinstall the OS?

Also before you do that, double check and make sure the CD drive is set as the first boot device in the BIOS/CMOS setup.

Yeah I just did a whole bunch of random stuff until it worked.

I think it was because somewhere said if you have that problem reset the bios basiclly so I set it back to defaults, but forgot to change the first priority to the dvd rom.

No lol.

It won't recognize my LAN lol. I try connecting through the XP wizard and it does nothing, try putting in my ISP's disc and it says there's no NIC.

I am right in assuming my motherboard (above) is capable of connecting to the interenet, no?

You need to install the drivers for you LAN. The drivers should be located on a CD that was included with your motherboard.

Windows XP with SP1 or SP2 should not have the 137GB HDD limitation.

If you don't have the service pack, you will need to get it in order for your HDD to be recognized completely.

What kind of internet access do you have? Cable, DSL, Dial-Up, or something else?

I have Cable, Comcast.

I try and install the disc Comcast gave me and it says it can't recognize any NIC. I look in modems, and hardware in the Control panel and can't find it any where myself.

I try installing just the ethernet drivers, it goes through, yet it can't be recognized.

Nah, I'm good got everything running, just played a lil Half-Life 2 lol. Only thing bothering me now is that M$ gives you 30 days to activate Windows and I lost the code. (I used our Dell's copy, it's a Windows XP disc, only kinda not what you buy at stores, it has like the Dell label and everything).
