Fresh Build:
This is a tentative list. I'm not sure about the mobo, but I think it will work. I was hoping to stay under $650 for everything. If you guys see anything that could be toned down a notch let me know.

Looks pretty good to me. The Samsung burner is good in my opinion, but a lot of users here prefer Lite-On so you may want to look into that.
Here is the Lite-On: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106019 Don't forget a copy of the OS too. Unless of course, you already have a copy.

I'm crossing my fingers that the HDD & opticals that I currently have will work. If they do, I'm sending the new ones back for a refund.
I would order a 2nd optical, but I have one on another older computer and can just use that. One more thing: Do the PSU & Case appear to be compliant? From the pictures, it seems the 2 would go together fine. |

Is there an add-on I can get that would give me access to front USB & Firewire? I could deal w/not having front firewire, but I need at least 1 usb up front. My mobo doesn't offer anything of the sort. I'm trying to find a good mobo with these components since I'm saving money by combining PSU & case, but I'm not having much luck. I looked around and found these. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144168 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144125 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811162027 |

Those cases aren't bad, but I would NOT use the PSUs that come with them.

I seem to be limited to at least 450w power supply thanks to my graphics card. I've been searching in 500w+, but will 450w be enough if I get that exactly? For example: using this case?

I'm also looking at this firewire/usb add-on. Is there a way I can use this to take advantage of the front usb/1394 ports on the front of my case?

That case is the best deal you are going to find for a case that comes with a good power supply.
Just switch the video card to one that doesn't need as much power and you will be fine. There are a lot of 6800 cards that only call for 350W. If you can get by without the firewire. you don't need a card. that motherboard has 2 internal connectors that each support 2 usb that you can connect the front panel usb to. If you want firewire later on you can buy a pci adapter card then.

The 450w will be more than enough for your setup.

I need the firewire for video stuff. If not for that, I wouldn't get it. I'm considering this, just to get me through: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16815106004. Can it be linked to the front ports somehow? My guess is that it's would just involve running the 'internal ports' to the front somehow, but is it just a cable connection? Also, I really need a Memory Card Reader. Should I be looking at one with a USB interface, or PCMCIA? |

I really suggest you spend the extra buck's on the gigabyte ds3 instead of s3.
Switch out that kingston for some Corsair DDR2 800. And your money will be much more wisely spent on a 7600gt vs. 6800gt.

Okay. Here are 2 different builds. I was really hoping to stay under $800 total. I'm truely thinking that I could get away with a 128mb video card, but I'm not certain. I wouldn't mind upgrading some parts later on when I get extra money, but at the same time, I'd rather get everything I need now.
Let me know what you guys think. You'll have to unzip it to get the excel file. Note there are 2 sheets in the file, labeled Build #1 or Build #2. Computer Build.zip Edit: Changed #2's Video Card. Last edited by bikinpunk; 08-17-2006 at 02:25 PM. |

![]() I am not too fond of that MSI board... So after rethinking it, build #2 looks better right now unless... you get the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 instead. |

I said in another post about replacing just the parts that were burnt up, when I thought I could do that. I'll restate again, though.
I plan on not playing games. I am a heavy multi-tasker. Burn dvds, rip dvds, video editing, photo editing, office products, light cad work (heavier later), avid downloader, that about does it. Thing is, I do all of the before-mentioned at the same time sometimes. ADHD > me. Thoughts on this video card? It would save me $30.00. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814170096 |

That is a okay video card, but it takes 256mb of your system memory to run at 512mb.

I don't really think I'd ever use it to that effect though. Plus, I have plans later of upgrading to 2gb ram. Also, I'm being told that when vista is released alot of graphics cards will change b/c of DirectX 10 being released to coincide.... Doesn't really matter to me at this point.

I would personally go with build 2.
But switch out that card for something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102641 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102651 It will do better with the type of work you do. Good choice on the ram (corsair) but try to make it ddr2 800. It will pay off in the future. Otherwise looks great. If your not worried about overclocking, I would go with this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121035 Stable as a Rock, Plus youll save some $$ Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 08-17-2006 at 04:16 PM. |

That zonet card is the wrong type of card. It has plug in ports, like on the outside of a case. You need one with a pin header like on the PPA I linked above. Both of those gigabyte boards have usb pin headers, so you can get by with a firewire only card like this one. Take a look at this picture. That cluster of 9 pins sticking up from the board is the type of connection you need. The Intel board in ferarri's last post would not need a pci card adapter. It has usb and firewire built in.

If I go with the Intel board you suggested, could I somehow have the 1394 & 2 USB ports wired up to be ran off the case's front inputs? If so, that would be nice. This board would eliminate my need for the extra firewire/usb pci card.

I suppose it does. According to the spec pdf file, it has:
EE Front panel USB headers [2] FF IEEE-1394a header How would these be connected to the front of the case? Is there a connection cable that ties these together that comes with the case, or board? Would it be something I'd have to purchase seperate? |
