Thermal Compound Question...

Hey everyone. When I had to return my old mobo, I of course had to take off the CPU and HSF. When I did that, I saw a little bit of the thermal compound that came with the HSF on the CPU. Now, my new mobo just arrived, and I also got some new thermal compound with it. Will I need to wipe off the old thermal compound and put on this new stuff, or can I keep the old stuff on the CPU and run it like that?

Thanks for the help.

It's best to replace the thermal compound. If any bubbles form when you put the HSF back on, it will be bad for the processor. Make sure you clean both the CPU and the HSF with high concentration ethanol with a cloth or q-tip, before you re-apply the grease.

Err... High Concentration Ethanol isn't something I have around the house :P. Is there an everyday household item I could use? If not... could I get this stuff at Wal-Mart, or a store like that?

91% Isopropryl Alcohol would be best. A buck or 2 at walgreens if you dont already have some.

I know you can get 98% ethanol at most electronics stores for like $5. But yes if you don't have any, isopropyl will do the job, but it may take a little longer. Whatever you do, don't use solvents such as acetone/nail polish remover.

If that is an Intel processor, you need to use the stock Intel thermal pad or you void the processor warranty.
Any local PC repair place should have them or order it from the link.
