Thinking to run Raid 0+1 will the 8mb cache's on the smaller drives in raid 0 pose as a potential bottleneck? Or should having two of them even things out roughly...

Then I also am scavenging a 17" Samsung SyncMaster 712N To run Dual screens

Scavenging a LiteOn DVD-RW forget the model atm and then either an older Plextor CD-RW or a 16x Toshiba DVD drive as the secondary optical No Floppy intended atm (gonna be my first build w/o *tear*) Also Planning to Scavenge USB Printer USB wireless Logitech Keyboard and Mouse, two speakers from back in the 1980s (should really prob get a new set at some point always can hookup my 1972 infinity home speakers through the amp though heh), an Audigy 2 sound card, and a Leadtek TV Tuner Card.

Basically I'm looking to upgrade from my current machine which is approaching 4 years old now and build what will hopefully be a rock to power me through my senior thesis and keep me entertained along the way plan for regular DVD backups and backups to offsite server storage.

As for an OS thinking Gentoo64 with possibly Win2000pro (realize it'd barely be taking advantage of the system but wouldnt be used terribly often and I dont feel like purchasing anything to do with XP)

Thoughts Comments Suggestions? Anything I'v missed? Anything I'm completely offbase in getting for my goals? Thank You All for taking the time to help me out!

I think you should go with an ASUS motherboard. Why would you need a server motherboard?

And you don't really need to get memory that is registered and has ECC.

Well... I was planning to put the dual Gigabit Lans to use and I'v wanted to run an Opteron for a long time something I havnt seen ASUS offer also I'v found my ASUS boards to be fine for a normal workstation they arent quite as stable as I might wish this machine will never be turned off etc. Always been curious about the Tyan boards aswell... but perhaps it is a wee bit overkill... do often have 6 folks logged into my box remotely though... granted not much but...

*edit* ASUS Offer in 939 stepping up to 940 seems to be a bit outside my price range at the moment
