Question Building a Computer

This was meant for the WoW forums but their log-in server is down and I'm thirsty for information so I found this forum and I am going to post it here:

Well, bascially as the title says I am dying to build a decent computer. After months of work at my job at Subway I finally have $700, which according to my uncle is enough dough to put together a computer that will run WoW and other similar games on settings medium to high with 0 lag. Yes, I want this very badly as my celeron and old pci video card (not pci-e) just doesn't cut it in IF. I really don't know where to start with this. I have heard that newegg.com is a good place to order parts to build a computer. But are those good deals or are they overpriced? I have heard that there are good deals at the computer show near Diamond Bar, CA, but are those deals better than newegg.com. What about going down to Fry's Electronics? Are the components they sell there on price?

Now, moving on to the actual hardware. I know a little about computer hardware, but not enough. I don't understand things like DDR2 or whatever that is and GDDR3. I really don't care as much about the technical stuff as much as getting the computer running and getting WoW to run on it, perfectly. I have found this tutorial on-line about how to assemble the parts:

http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/

Could somebody who was done this before please tell me if that's a good resource and an accurate source of information? Also I have heard that RAM is unstable if you don't fill both slots with the same number such as 512x512 or 1GBx1GB or if you leave one slot of RAM empty such as just one 1GBx0. For example would something such as this 1GBx512MB be unstable RAM?

Now, about the OS the computer is running on. I have been told by my uncle that I technically own Windows XP Home Edition because when I purchased my eMacrapmachines from Best Buy I was legally buying the OS as well. My uncle said that if I call Best Buy and ask for a copy of my OS they legally have to provide a place for me to download the OS or a CD/DVD which conatins the OS. My question is has anybody done this before and if so how should I go about this? I really would like to save myself $100 and not buy XP Pro right now and just use XP Home until I get another paycheck so that I can have more money to spend on hardware as my budget is only $700.

Finally, I have seen this before as if anybody would like to do it for me, could somebody please link all the parts I would need to build a $700 gaming computer and run WoW and other games such as TS2 with all expansions and extra packs such as Fun Stuff, AOE III and its upcoming expansion, and CS: Source. The $700 includes shipping and tax and this is a very strict budget unforunately as I am not 18 yet and cannot use credit (only debit).

Well first off 700 dollars wont exactly make the best gamer. But it will be decent as long as you dont add a monitor to that price.

Newegg.com is definately the best resource, prices are competetive. I also like, www.zipzoomfly.com , www.tankguys.com , www.mwave.com , www.geeks.com , www.monarchcomputers.com

-As far as resources go, google and this site will truely be you best friends, there are alot of articles on the home and guide pages that can be a big help.

-No as long as your motherboard supports it that ram configuration will not cause ram to be unstable but you will lose the ability to do dual channel.

-that copy of windows xp can only be used on one computer and one computer only and that being your emachines.

Whats your budget, and what does that budget include. i.e monitor? And do you have a preference of amd or intel?

I can help you with a couple of things....

1. You have to buy a new copy of windows with the new build. The copy that came with your old comp will only work with that mobo, and no other. Sorry to tell you but you gota spend that extra money...

2. As for stability of memory,i think i might know what you're refering to. Memory works best in pairs that are either exactly the same or have the same spces. Doing this will allow the memory to run as dual channel, giving a bit of a preformance boost. Can you use unpaired memory? Yes, but it just won't run as dual channel.

3. Newegg is by far the most popular site to buy parts from. I also like zipzoomfly.com. Both have competative prices, but i have found out through personal expierence that the service at newegg is better and the prices at zzf are a little cheaper.

Hope this helps...

Post Preference

I already have like 40 different mointers lol. The $700 does not include a moniter.

I would prefer AMD as I've heard it's better. I want something highly upgradable so once I get more paychecks I can add RAM to my system or upgrade the processor or video card.

Also I would like pci-e for the video since everything else seems...dead.

One question about gaming and LCD moniters. Is it true that LCD moniters can decrease performance of games?

1. AMD better than intel? False, its normally a personal preference.

2. False

Thank you so much. I love my LCD very much as when I want to do homework I can just scoot it back on my desk. I do not want to go CRT. Still, I think I am going to go AMD though.

Search the forum, read up a bit, and you'll easily be able to pick your own parts out. Once you do post what you picked out and everyone will give their input.

I'm quite happy with what you've put here. These are all the parts I will need? I am going to make some changes with the HD as I only need probably no more than 120 GB. I will repost the final build when I am done.

Allright I really suck at this what you posted Mr. Ferrarri is good but when you add the OS and the shipping it's over $700. What can I afford to tune down?

EDIT: I can't go over the $700 even if there are rebates.

Unfortunately $700 must include shipping and the OS.

Well I guess you can tune the proc down to something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539
but I would truely suggest no less.
That'll cut out about 50 bucks. Otherwise everything else is a minimum, if you really want tone down the hd but make sure you get something sata from either seagate or westerdigital, preferably 16mb, might save you maybe 20 bucks.

Unhappy Hmm

Ouch. Well, I am probably going to Fry's Electronics tomorrow. I'm thinking about buying a HP computer has a 3800+ dual core and 1 gb of ram and pci x16 slot for like $449. Maybe I will just go with that and buy a vide card on top of that.
