Another New PC Build for Gaming/General
Hey Guys,
Heres another 'new pc build' thread for you to critique on. I am basically planning on building a new pc. Not specifically for hardcore gaming as I just purchased a massive pc (over $9000) for that purpose. I am more building this pc: 1) To learn about building pcs 2) Cause I feel depressed that I didn't wait for the new Conroe cpus that surpass my current top cpu. 3) So I have a pc I can constantly update myself, so I'll always have a pc that is generally top of the line. My budget is exactly $3000 no more (unless for a really really good reason). I'll be using the pc for gaming, video editing, image editing, 3d modelling, word processing and general things. I'll also, most likely be adding/replacing parts, overclocking the system and modifying it heaps (with blue leds etc.). I definately want this system to have a high capacity to be upgraded so basically I want the motherboard to last as long as possilbe (thats why I am willing to spend a lot on that). Further I want it to contain two video cards in SLI or Crossfire (or have the video card ready to be run in dual-video card mode) and I want the cpu to be one of the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Lastly I want the case to have a side window. I'll be reusing my keyboard, monitors, speakers and mouse from my other pcs. This is the current build I've been working on: CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 [may upgrade to E6600 if price is still under $3000] - $309 MOBO: [Not sure] - ~$400 GPU: 2 x XFX Geforce 7900GTs in SLI [Might consider waiting for the X1950XTX from ATi. If so, I'll get one of those and use that with an older card for Crossfire] - $1058 Sound Card: [Not sure] - ~$300 RAM: [Not sure] - $300 PSU: Thermaltake Tough Power 600W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153033 - $179 Case: Thermaltake Soprano VB1430BWS Black Chassis http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133156 - $139 HDD: SATAII 160mb [is currently inactive in my old pc, for some reason it isn't working there... it only gets reconised in DOS] - $0 Optical Drives: [Not sure, only want 1.. but can add another one, later if needed] - ~$200 Total: $2885 [if the price stays around here, I might consider upgrading to the E6600] Note: Prices are from my local distributor, who I'll be buying the parts from. With the case, I do realise that it comes with a PSU, but the store I plan to buy the parts from doesn't sell the version without a PSU and I like the side window of this case and I can't seem to find any other case that looks this nice. Can you get the retailers to pull out the PSU for you then sell the case seperate? I probably won't buy anything until I hear more about the newer motherboards that support crossfire with the X1950XTX and Intel Core 2 Duo processors. I would love to hear some advice on this build. Also, how much RAM would you recommend? What type of RAM? Is $300 enough? Lastly, if a PSU is Nvidia SLI certified, is it also ATi Crossfire certified? Many thanks, Maqqie EDIT: I forgot to add, I want a motherboard with the maximum number of PCI-Express/PCI slots possible, because I will most likely be purchasing as TV Tuner and PPU soon to add in. Also if I decide to use the pc for storage I might add a HBA for additional HDDs. Last edited by Maqqie; 08-19-2006 at 03:25 AM. |

Why are you spending so much on that proc? It costs in the low 200s from www.zipzoomfly.com and www.tankguys.com
Mobo: Well if you want to go sli you'll have to wait a bit until the nforce 590's come out. But if not, best choices would be the Intel badaxe rev.304 or 305, or Asus P5WDH. I seriously think your better off with a single gx2. Trust me thats all the power youll need unless you get into the 2048x1900 res's, with everything turned up on high. Sound card: I suggest the X-FI xtreme music around 100 bucks Ram: Can never go wrong with some of this stuff: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 PSU: Good choice on the psu. All toughpowers 600w and up are great. And yes it will run sli. Actually crossfire is 2x harder to run then sli, as far as power goes. But I see you listed 179 here, did you mean to link the 750W version? Optical: You dont need 200, 100 will get you the top of the line plextor sata dvdrw. 30 will get you a great liteon ide dvdrw.

Ah, sorry my bad didnt realise it was in AUD.
For crossfire, you mean X1950XTX crossfire or X1900XT crossfire, because the power requirements are higher for the 50. Oh and the new series should be coming out early to mid september. Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 08-19-2006 at 06:18 PM. |

You can probably get a LITE-ON or NEC burner (not sure what's available in your area) for less than $100 AUD - not sure of the conversion rate, but I would guess $50 or so.

Also, Mr.Ferrari, with that RAM you recommended, I was looking at the stock my retail store has and they sell these two: - 2GB D2 6400 Corsair Twinx [$359] - 2GB D2 6400 C4 Corsair Twinx [$449] I wasn't sure which one you were recommending. |

The first one will be fine...the second has tighter timings, but it won't give you much performance increase...it's not worth the extra $100

Go with the one for 359. Lower cas doesnt help with core 2 duo.
And on the psu, does your store have like a website or something? I can help choose what would be best for bang/buck. 1950XTX shouldnt take a whole lot more power then 1900xtx. |

Here is the Crossfire certified power supply list.
The 1900's are DX9. I don't think the DX10 cards will be released untill about the same time as Vista, which is the only OS that DX10 will be able to run on. From ATI's site: Quote:

I would suggest the thermaltake toughpower 700W or 750W. 700W should be more then sufficient, you will be able to power both of those cards plus a little extra headroom. But you dont need more then 700W.
Oh and X1950XTX's should be coming out early to mid september . So its not too long of a wait if you are indeed interested in that.
