My new computer has been running pretty well for about a week now, but I hosed it last night. When moving a window in Windows or scrolling through a browser window, movements were not smooth, but rather jerky. It was like I would move a window and it would jumpt to the new location instead of move there slowly, or I would scroll through a window, but it would jump down an inch or so and redraw there instead of scroll smoothly.
I thought there was a problem with my monitor, but it does the same on two different monitors. So I thought maybe there was a problem with the video card. The video card was built in to my mother board, so I thought maybe I would have to buy a dedicated video card. Then someone suggested the driver might need updating, so I looked in the mother board book and noticed that I had not installed any of the dirvers that came with my mother board. The mother board is Gigabite with an AMD Athlon 3400 processor (came free with the mother board from Newegg.com). I put the CD in and it came up and said it would load about 8-10 different drivers for various things (including the video card) and automatically reboot. When rebooting, the bios screen comes up and everything like normal, then Windows XP starts loading. However, instead of going to the blue login screen, it goes to a blank, black screen. Then it just sits there and does nothing. I can power down by pushing the power button, but when I power up again, I get the same thing. Any suggestions? |

Tap the F8 key whilst your machine is starting, hopefully you will get a black screen with white lettering offering you various startup options, use the up arrow to select safemode and press enter.
