I've recently bpught a pc off a friend cheap. this is because it doesn't turn on.
There were no lights on the motherboard with the power supply unit it came with and absolutly nothing happend when the power button was pressed. So i've bought a new PSU off e-bay. With the new one installed i now have a light on the motherboard when the power is on. But still nothing happens when the power button is depressed. The power button seems to be in good condition and is correctly plugged into the motherboard into what i believe is the right pins. Is there anything i've missed? or is it going to be the processor or the motherboard itsself? The processor is a 2.8GHz intel Celeron, and if it needs replacing i was also wondering if i could relace it with a Pentium? Thanks for any help, greatly appreciated.

It may well be either the motherboard or processor...
It is also possible that clearing the CMOS may solve your problems too. Remove the battery from the motherboard for a few mins then replace it and trying turning on again. Where is the light on the motherboard that is coming on with the new PSU? Does the light have any kind of label near it to say what it means? To determine what kind of processor you can put in the motherboard you will have to identify what kind of CPU socket you have. It may say on the CPU / socket / manual or just post the motherboards make and model here and Im sure someone can help you.

Can you get some back ground information from your friend as to why and when this machine died, very often when a cheap power supply dies it takes the motherboard with it.
Were there any thunderstorms around the time of the power supply's demise? Is it a store bought branded machine or custom built?

It was a store bought PC, and my friend told me he shut the pc down one evening, and the next morning it just didn't turn on. Not sure about any thunderstorms, but i do know he was using a power surge power socket.
I will try clearing the CMOS, and i will post another reply about the location of the LED, i just cannot do it right now. thanks for your help!

Even though it's a store bought PC, I'd still try the steps in this thread:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 If it still doesn't boot, then you have a bad component. What brand and model computer is it? Some ship with propriatory power supplies, and if you bought a standard ATX unit to replace it, then you could have given yourself another problem! FK

And what brand and model is the power supply you bought on e-bay.
e-bay is about the worst possible place to be buying computer parts.
