Need AM2 mobo and RAM, what do i get?
Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help with a new computer I'm building. Here's some basic info:
I'm mostly a gamer and multimedia editor so that's what I want this computer to focus at. I already have a video card, EVGA Ge-Force 7900GTX 512MB, and a processor, AMD AM2 64 X2 4000+. I saw this processor somewhere for less than half of what it's going for on newegg.com and had to get it. It's got a lot of overclocking potential and what really sopld me was the 2MB L2 cache. I don't plan on liquid cooling anything, however I did plan on getting a good Arctic Cooler for the processor. Now's where I'm kind of stumped. I know that now I'll need a new motherboard and consequently new RAM, but I'm unsure as of what to get. I already have all the HDD space I need so we'll forget that. I have a beautifully modded LianLi case, saitek eclipse red backlit keyboard, razor mouse, and a nice LCD. So really all I need is the mobo and RAM. I've read around that PC2-6400 (800Mhz) is the way to go, but I have no idea what brand is better, or what performs better for things like gaming or video editing (of which I do a lot of). Also I know the frequency your RAM runs at depends on the processor you have and since I definately plan on clocking mine to around 2.6Ghz I thought that may factor into things as well. I don't want to buy 800Mhz RAM and have it only run at 776Mhz or whatever. I was thinking something Corsair XMS2 series but I'm looking for suggestions. Price range for 2GB of $200-$250 would be nice (I won't need more than that will I?), but I can stretch that if I need to. And then the motherboard... Here's what I'm thinking: Do I really need SLI with the video card I've got (7900GTX)? I'm leaning no because #1 I'm happy with it's performance on games like BF2 and Oblivion with my current computer. #2 That would roughly be another $500 for another card. So no SLI, right. That alone kind of severely limits my choice of AM2 mobo's since all the high end one's seem to have SLI. I like the Asus M2N32-SLi Deluxe because of the nForce 590, 2 x 1Gb LAN access, built in wireless connectivity, etc... basically I love all the features of it MINUS the SLI. If I could find a board exactly like it without the SLI, I would glady pay for it. Or maybe I just get that mobo and save the Sli capabilities for anotehr day, because if I ever DO get SLI, I'm definately going to want true 32bit, otherwise, what's the point if you ask me. $200 is really all I wanted to spend on the motherboard but again, I can be flexible. Ok, so there's my quandries. Thanks for reading through it all, I know it's lengthy and ANY suggestions or insight on what I may do or might do differently would be vastly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Christopher P.S. I knew I'd forget something. PSU. I've got a 550W Antec, with the removable wires (nice feature by the way), will I need a new one for this processor, mobo, and ram I'm getting? Thanks again. Look at my sig. My mobo comes in an SLI version, but it seems like you won't need that. For the memory, make sure you get something on the QVL. Corsair XMS2 has had great sucess on the AM2 platform and it will run at the full 800 Mhz. Good Luck!

Could anyone be a little more specific?
Will I need a new PSU for all of this? Is corsair the best stuff or should I get something OCZ... Still a lot of questions I need help with. |
