My First Build..Gone bad..

Alrighty,

I'm new here, but I followed the guide on your mainpage to complete my first build. I was happy when the light came on and everything worked as it should...

But now I am running into problems...

This is my configuration..

UltraX Infinity 500W PS
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo
2048MB Kingston DDR Ram
nVidia GeForce 7950 1GB GDDR3 Video Card
SeaGate 320GB HDD

Now the problem is, I can go through the BIOS, thats all good, then I boot up my WindowsXP CD and partition the HDD for Windows and all that jazz, then about 35% into the WindowsXP installation, it just simply hangs, the graphics and text full of XP Propoganda keep floating by and the little green bar at the bottom keeps doing its thing, just no progress, for about an hour...

Any idears?

Thanks Guys!

Fixed the problem, after I tinkered with the HDD, the problem now is that the HDD reads only 127GB and not 350GB...anyone know why?

PLEASE can someone help me...

I have tried everything I can and cannot get any of my USB ports to work. I am using an ASUS A8N-Sli Deluxe motherboard with BIOS version 5.1.39.

I am starting to go nuts without my mouse! None of the USB ports recognize it...I have tried updating to SP1 and then installing the USB 2.0 drivers...Nada...Tinkered in the BIOS...Nothing...

PLEASE...Does anyone have any ideas?!

Is it possible you changed somewthing in the BIOS relating to the USB ports?
Do you have a non USB mouse you could try in the meantime?
It seems your problem began right after you tinkered with the hard drive?

Well I checked the BIOS and everything for the USB ports was still Enabled. So I said screw it and took everything out and put it back in the exact same way. Of course, they work fine now and I am working on the computer as we speak.

I have unfortunately ran into ANOTHER problem.

I have connected to the internet. (Adding nVidia's AND Microsoft's Firewalls) and have gone to the Windows Update site. I did the first update, and did the complimentary reboot after installation.

After the reboot, the computer got past the green bar Window's boot up screen and the monitor went dark, waiting and waiting...Nothing happened...

So I went into SafeMode and reverted back to my current status...Any idea what would cause THAT problem?

Thanks for the replies guys...

Did you check to see if possibly there was an extra mounting stud in the case shorting the motherboard preventing the USB ports from working? This is not an unheard of problem. Since it's working now it may have been something else.
Which Microsoft updates did you get?

LOL all of them...It seems to never work the first few times and then it will...

I have one final question before my comp will finally be able to be hooked up for gaming...

I don't know who can answer it but I am using an ASUS A8N-Sli Deluxe Mobo with onboard sound...there is a cord inside the case for the sound, with many one prong wires...

Labelled...

Ground
SPK OUT R
SPK OUT L
MIC BIAS
MIC IN
RETURN R
RETURN L

Those are the only labels, I have checked the manual, but I can't find out where they go...The audio area of the motherboard has no labels and it would take hours to test each one...

Ideas?

where does this cable go to? is it going to the audio connections in the front of your case?

Yes, the cable (with multiple ends) is coming from the front side of the case...

I didn't think it needed to be hooked up, but obviously it does, cause I got NO sound...

Watcha thinking?

And if you connect your speakers to the rear terminals of the motherboard what happens?

go to the volume control in the system tray(lower right) and check all audio/volume controls. Make sure none of the slider controls are muted or at the bottom.

Open up the volume properties panel and see which device you have set for playback. It's under options and then properties.

Assuming the speakers work and are connected properly you should have sound.

Your telling me, that I don't need to connect any of those audio wires?

I checked Audio Properties first, everything is set to the proper settings, nothing is muted, nothing is low.

Yes that is what I am saying. You should not need to connect those wires to have sound. According to the manual th e gray connector is for the rear speakers. Do you need to load some extra software to make it work?

I've tried all the analog holes on the back, no sound from any of them. There is no "extra" software. Just the Drivers, which I installed.

I'm downloading some stuff from RealTeks site right now...We'll see...

Thanks!

You have probably already read the manual but on pages 2-18 and 2-19 it tells how to connect to spakers only. It the green colored connector. Other than that you may need to consider the possibility the onboard sound is dead. Hope thats not the case.

Are you sure the speakers work? Is the volume turned up?
