someone told me no to pentium d...what processor should i get?

So some people on here told me to get this processor:

Intel Pentium D 820 Smithfield 800MHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor- $116
newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116213

but then i posted it on a diff forum and they said this:
"The Pentium D is a crap processor. High power consumption with mediocre performance. It was a stop gap measure for Intel until they had developed a good dual core processor"

So my question is, is what that guy said false? Is the Pentium D a good processor? Should I get it? If not, what Is a good processor for gaming AROUND THE SAME PRICE?
(I thought that would be good when you guys recommended it because it was only $116, it was dual core and it was 2.8ghz)

The 820 is not a bad processor by any means. Now it's no Core 2. Which if you have the cash for it, is an incrdable leap in CPU tech but not everyone has that much money. If you can handle an extra $20 the 915 would be better, but for the price the 820 would be just fine.

Yeah, the 9xx series has twice as much L2 cache (2x2MB vs 2x1GB) and it'll run cooler...
