Another 'I need build advice' thread
Hello all,
All the computers I have ever owned have been dell, but i have decided to take the plunge and build my own. I have already made a list of components to buy, but decided to scrap it and start from scratch. I only need the main computer: I already have a screen, speakers, mouse and keyboard and my budget is £500, thats $948 (according to XE currency converter). However it's streachable by £50 to £100 (A streachable budget sort of defeats the point of a budget in the first place )I'm inclined to go with AMD and Nvidia (although if thats a bad combo please tell me). I was also thinking of trying to squeeze in a dual core CPU. Could you give me some pointers please? Oh, and which do you think is better: AM2 or 939? Thanks, Jamie Salter One last question, is there any reason I should wait and buy in a few months time due to new technology coming out? |

now is a great time to build anyway, some great new technology either just came out, or just got it's prices cut in half.

AM2 is the future now for AMD, but theres always a chance something else will popup.
skt 939 is to be discontinued so you can get a bargain on 939 tech. freakitchen proposed a £500 build in a similar thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=164560 check out some alternative components further down. personally im looking to upgrade to a X1900XT at some stage soon, with the release of the X1950 range, i read somewhere that ATI have a glut of X1900 cards to move so should produce some significant savings even on todays quite low prices. for ex: http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605471

Thanks for the tips and links.
However, I might make a change of tact and go with AM2 (I was originally thinking 939). Are there any motherboards you would suggest which also support Nvidia and SLi? Cheers, Jamie Salter |
