conroe e6400 won't start up!!

i recently just built my first computer with the following specs:
conroe e6400
asus p5b deluxe wi-fi
corsair xms2 ddr twin2x5400 (2gb)
xfx geforce 7600gt
xclio 450watt
seagate 320gb hdd
lian li 65b case

when i turn the power switch on from the psu the light on the mobo comes on then when i turn the power on from the case all the fans turn on for about a second and then stop.
if it hit reset or power from the case again after that nothing happens unless the reset the power from the psu

did i connect the parts incorrectly or is my ram messed up or could i have broken one(or more) of the parts during assembly????

any input would do thanks

Double check that you have all of the power connections attached to the motherboard, especially the 2x2 square power pins.

On the ASUS website they mention that someboards need a bios update to recognize the new dual core cpu's. This may be your problem. If it is then you can call asus for help with the bios chip.

even if the bios was the wrong version wouldn't it give me more than a second of fan movement?

I would try an out of case build making sure to use a non conductive surface to place the motherboard on. You may have something the case, like an extra standoff, causing a problem, Also you should be able to verify the bios revision. I think its marked on the bios chip.

it doesn't sound like a faulty power supply, and knowing that the newer boards often need a new bios... that seems to be the issue. But, like tempus says, build it out of the case on a non-conductive surface and... just make sure you don't smell anything you shouldn't be, some power supplies work... just dish out insufficient power.
