New Build, CD-Rom/DVD Rom running too fast?? Help

If anyone out there could help me ??? I just built a computer out of used parts everything works great except I can't get the cd-rom and dvd rom to slow down. Everything sounds like the chipmunks when played in any of my optical drives.(Even on my DVD writer.) I don't know how to slow these down??? I am using a 400w ATX12v Startech PSU, Spire case, M850MD motherboard(Older but ok), Pentium 4 2.0 GHZ cpu, jaton graphics card, 20 GB hard drive( will upgrade to 40 GB later), windows ME ( will upgrade to XP later). Using these just to test the machine. Any thoughts???

What are you using for sound.....a sound card or onboard? If it's a sound card, make sure you've got the correct drivers for that card and try reinstalling those. But if it's onboard sound you'll need to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard since the sound driver is integrated into those.

you know what it sounds like to me though?

just a simple audio codec problem... I think that if you downloaded a pack of audio codecs and installed them, it would work just fine. If not, listen to juppy. I would check the codecs first though. Seems to me like you have a low compression mp3 codec and are trying to play 128kbp/s files, which would mean your codecs need some serious upgrading lol. Seems likely if built with older parts.

perhaps an easier way to see if you need codecs or not is to put another drive in there and see what happens (if you have another laying around). If you have an advanced knowledge of codecs though, you should be able to look at your codecs installed and see if you are missing what you need.

If it's a codec issue, try the K-Lite Codec Pack. You can download it from www.free-codecs.com.
