Welcome.

There are few things we can change. First is that you have an Intel motherboard and and Athlon CPU. Would you prefer to use AMD or Intel? This will affect changing either the CPU or motherboard, as well as the ram.

Second is the power supply. The one included in that case is poor quality. The Antec TruePower 2 units are excellent.

I would suggest a DVD burner instead of just a dvdrom, so you can burn DVDs and CDs.

Depends which brand you prefer. For AMD, keep that CPU, and go with an Asus A8N5X motherboard and 1GB (2x512) PC3200 DDR RAM from Corsair.

For Intel, the Asus P5B and a Core 2 Duo e6300 along with a gig of DDR2-800 ram would be a good combo.

Do you have a budget?

If you go with the AMD 939 system, you can save a lot more. Then A8N5X is around $80. 1GB of PC3200 is around $105, no need for the PC4400. You could also drop the hard drive down to a 250GB, those are under $100.

Don't forget to change the power supply though, that will cost a bit extra, but it is critical.

If you decide on a Core 2 Duo system, it won't be as cheap as the Athlon, but its still do-able. The C2D system would be more powerful though.

Do you need Windows XP?

Please choose between AMD or Intel so we can proceed.

1. The HP burner is overpriced - get a Lite-On.
2. Apevia power supplies are no good either. The ONLY case that comes with a decent power supply is the Antec Sonata II. ANYTHING else should be bought WITHOUT a power supply and a quality unit selected for it.
3. Try the onboard sound before you buy a sound card.
4. You do NOT need XMS ram with a 939, value ram will work fine.

keep in mind that the power supply may indeed work and be just fine... but after all... who knows for certain. Some of the cheapest power supplies can last up there with the big-timers, but they can also crash in a week and wipe out other parts with it as well. Never hold cash on the psu.

I have chosen the antec sonata II for a build of mine, and planned on using the power supply with it to save money. I think that is most likely a smart route to go, but will that case cool everything properly? It comes with only 1x 120mm fan after all. I have another 125mm fan, but it is loud... I didn't want to use it on there, but I will if i need to. If so, where should I put the second 120mm fan?

I would also recommend the antec sonata II for your build kibbles.

Sure. See if you can find the case without a power supply to save a few bucks. One of the mentioned Antec's or an FSP Forton or Sparkle power supplies are good choices. I'd say a minimum of a 450W would work.

450 -500 sounds more than acceptable for a power supply

((sorry about my question regarding the antec sonataII))
