case/ motherboard match

this is my first build. I bought an Antec sonata II case and an MSI 945 Neo2 series motherboard.
I have the CPU and RAM loaded and went to put the MB in the case and I see that the port holes in the back (for the lan connector, serial port, etc) don't match. Apparently the MB doesn't match the case. Would I be an idiot to take the panel off the so the port holes are no longer in the way? Or do I need to exchange case for another one? I thought if it took an ATX board I was ok, guess not.

Motherboards don't match cases; there is no way any case can "match" all the different kinds of motherboards out there. That's why every motherboard comes with the appropriate I/O shield. Remove the I/O shield from the case, and use the one that came with your motherboard. It should be in the motherboard packaging somewhere.

Check the box that the motherboard came in, it should have the correct I/O plate that you swap out with the one already on the case. The original one just snaps out and the new one snaps in.
