bit of a price difference between the two :P
Both systems will game - the latter better than the former obviously, but the big difference in gaming performance is the video card. Personally, I'd build the AMD system with 2GBs of RAM and the X1900XT / 7900GT for a top gaming system without spending huge money. You've got the right idea with the quality of your components overall FK

For your build, go with Antec Sonata II. Great case, comes with 450 W QUALITY power supply, and costs you $80-100 depending on if you catch them on sale or not. I just finished building mine (which looks very similar to your dream build) and right now everything's working great!
If you are using the Sonata II and the P5W dh Deluxe, make sure to set the Front Audio Bios to AC 97 or else the sound won't work. Also, here's a couple lessons I learned during my build: 1) There are TWO power connectors between the motherboard and power supply, the 24 pin one and a 4 pin one. Make sure you have both connected. 2) If you're getting a 7900GT, make sure to install the extra power cable that comes with it or else you will be getting a 0.5 fps framerate. |

I've got an NEC drive in this rig, and used them before, and they are good drives (wow, that's a clunky sentence). Haven't used LITE-ON's, so I can't really compare.

Thanks Ferrari, however I think I'd rather order all my parts from Newegg just to make it easy.
This is what I've put together so far Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144102 Do I need more than 2x80mm fans? Power Supply: I never thought I'd ask for suggestions, but I am. I'm unsure if the Forton Source 450w will be sufficient. CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115005 Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145566 - Should I get anything cheaper? HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 DVD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151118 Video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130033 I'll also get a keyboard, mouse, OS, monitor, etc. Anybody mind recommending a good budget wireless PCI adapter for a wireless network? Am I missing anything else? Last edited by newbuilder14; 09-25-2006 at 03:53 PM. |

The fortron 450w would probably power that system ok. Personally, though, I'd get a 500w+ power supply to give myself some headroom.
One intake fan, one exhaust fan should provide you with sufficient cooling. Check your temperatures before thinking about more cooling. I'd go for this PCI Wireless card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124115 FK |

Sorry, I must've added it just after you saw this topic. Video card will be determined soon, I'm thinking of a 7900gt, many people that play CSS say they have a 7900gt. Should I take this over the x1900xt?

If you can afford a X1900XT then go for it, it will run laps around that 7900gt.
Otherwise any budget for the psu? |

The 256mb x1900xt? Because that is cheaper than the 7900gt at the moment. Budget for PSU I guess is somewhere around the $50-80 range.

Sparkle 460W This is the minimum I would use for the x1900xt. Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 09-25-2006 at 05:50 PM. |

Newegg has the Antec Smartpower 500w Power Supply for $70, which will give you some headroom for that powerful video card.

If I were to use a Gigabyte DS3 + Kingston 1gb DDR2667 + e6300 + x1600pro should that run games decently on a budget? I'm hoping 120fps+, but am weary with using that low priced video card, and am on a budget. What is the best budget card that will be a good performer?

The X1600PRO will not handle new games at 120+fps. I would choose the 7600GT if you're on a budget.

Concur with the 7600GT suggestion. Tom's hardware have just written a gude on the best video cards in various price brackets. The 7600GT is voted the best card in its bracket - although the prices are in GBP, the relative performances work for both sides of the pond

Don't necessarily expect 120+ FPS for modern games on high settings...you'll have smooth video over 40-50 fps. The 7600GT or X1600Pro should be able to handle the newest games on decent settings in that FPS range (all depends on the game and settings really)
Here's the version with American $$: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/09/...for_the_money/ |
