How am I doing?

Ok, I'm ready to build--here's what I've settled on (I think).

I have an OS (Ubuntu) already.

This will be for office apps, occasional (not hardcore) gaming for my stepson, and mostly music management.

I got 512Mb of Ram in a quality stick (right?) and will upgrade to 1G or 2 if I feel it's necessary later.

So here's the list, fire away

MOBO

RAM

I also have a case and power supply and 300GB WD SATA HDD

Thanks

Are you sure that motherboard supports the Pentium D? I don't think it does.

Geeks sells a lot of old discontinued stuff - not what I would build with unless I had a special need.

If you want a good cheap build, I'd be looking at something like this - a Pentium-D 805 on an Asus P5LD2 with a 2x512 kit of dual channel DDR2-533 or 667, and a $100 video card.

What brand and wattage is that power supply, and is it ATX 2.0 with a 24 pin main connector?

How do you expect to game with Ubuntu?

Well--this day has got me re-thinking all of that. I've been reassured that Warcraft (the only game we use around here) run on Ubuntu with Wine or Cedega. I understand configuration isn't the easiest thing in the world to do, but right now I've got some problems with M$. Just a personal issue.

And yeah--Geeks is out--I just realized that over half of the stuff is "refurbished" on there. Not what I'm after. And I've been schooled (by reading other recent posts) about video cards vs. onboard.

So I'm re-thinking the whole thing now. I'll repost when I get a little less....umm...undereducated.
