Frequent Shutdowns - no solution :(

It's been a year since I built my new PC and it's been working great until today. It shutdown in the middle of the day and when i tried to turn it on it shut down again and again.

The PSU is the first thing that came to mind - I have an ULTRA X-CONNECT 500W which is supposed to be good, so I dont know

My cpu is running at 35-40C

Could it really be my power supply even though its a good brand?

Thanks in advance!

Its possible that its the PSU desite it being a decent brand. Unfortunatly even the best of brands can fail from time to time and that goes for eveything, not just PSU's.

The CPU temperature is fine so no worries with that!

When you say that the machine shuts down...

Does it power off abruptly or go through the shutdown process? i.e. saving your settings and so on?

We recently reviewed a couple Ultra power supplies here and it was bad news. Ultra is no longer on our good list. They are way overpriced...I've heard they are decent, but they aren't worth the $$. Wouldn't happen to have a decent power supply hanging around or one you could borrow before buying something new?

Also, even good brands will have a dud once in a while - less likely to have one, but there's still a chance.

The X-Connects are horrible. The only ultra I would ever trust with my pc is their Xfinity line. Which are ok, but nothing amazing.

The xfinity line is built by win-tech=decent
but the (especially older) X-connects are built by YoungYear=Equivalent to crappy aspire and other generic psu qualities.

The first step I would take is definately try to find a descent powersupply to replace it.

I'd also strip the computer down to its core components, as detailed here:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

If it doesnt start up like this - then you have a faulty component. As already said, I'd first swap out the power supply with a known working one. Also check the motherboard for leaking/bulging capacitors - a sign of it going south.

Are we talking about the system in your signature here? If not, please post full system specs.

Ferrari, the bad Ultras we tested were Wintechs. I don't trust any of their units any more.

Wow then thats suprising!

I guess you find out the true potential of components when put through real world testing =/

We didn't even have to load them down heavily - they were unstable trying to run a basic Celeron system with onboard video.

The 300 watt unit Tyler was referring to is a Rosewill. Go figure.

lol, ferrari is dumbfouned... made my day to see that.

but yea, your problem almost definitely is psu related. I think it may also be HD related if it can't read how to load windows... but im not sure.

My best bet seems to be with the power supply, especially since i read the ultra article when considering parts for a new build and it shocked me. I would hate to have an older unit of theirs.
