No Go
I'm a novice builder. Just got the video card I forgot to order and put it in my antec sonata II case and when I power up, I get nothing. no lites, sounds, fans, nothing. I put a meter on the jpw1 plug and between the various receptacles. and on the ATX plug, I can't find any power anywhere. Is there a way to confirm this is a dead power supply?

First, please post your full system specs.
I'd follow the steps detailed in this thread. It's the only way to determin a faulty component http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 FK

So I just set up and out of the box setup. Crossed the pwr sw leads and got a small twitch on the cpu fan, then nothing and nothing since.

Looks like a DOA Power Supply to me, though there's the potential for a faulty motherboard too. I'm pretty sure that a fault with any other component would still allow the system to power up.
The Antec unit in the sonata case is a quality one, but every manufacturer has its share of duds. Do you have another power supply that you can swap in to test with? Also check the obvious stuff - voltage switch (if there is one on the rear of the power supply) set to 110/115 for US, 230 for elsewhere, and the power switch. Also swap out the power chord. FK |

Does the power supply have a rocker switch on the back? "1" is ON, "0" is OFF.
