My new build
This will sound dumb to some but I need to know...
 I'm buliding my first computer using an article I found in PC world.Its almost complete but no mention of using a modem or a place to plug phone into mother board.It does have LAN connections,can I use these for the phone connections?Its a ASUS A8N-SLI.I do have a modem from old computer,do I need to install this?

You can purchase them or yes I suppose you should install that one. You may need to get drivers for it though.

A phone cord won't work in the LAN connectors. If you need dial up abilities, then you'll need a seperate modem.

I'm a noob at this myself but..
...the newer modems (since 2003) are v.92 as opposed to v.90. I don't know how much better they are but supposedly they allow for faster downloads and can be had for a song. (~$15). I'm currently in the midlle of my 1st build and I just bought a new one from newegg ($20 w/ $10 rebate) rather than looking for the drivers. They go in the PCI slot.

If your using XP, try the old modem before buying one. I used an old modem not too long ago in a build and XP set it right up.
