Hi everyone, I have just put together the following, using advice from various forums and articles on this site:
AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 1GB (1x1GB DDR2-800) PCI-E X1600XT well it dosent really matter i dont think...anyway, my problem is i put in the windows disk and it says: "Disk boot error please enter system disk and press enter" When i put in an ms-dos boot disk it comes up with an A:\> prompt. From here how do i install windows? None of the few commands i know in dos seem to work...fdisk and run dont do anything Thanks, Chris |

You need to enter the Bios immediately after turning on your computer by pressing F2 in most cases. Then set your first boot device to the CD drive. Reboot your computer with your Windows Disk in, and you're good to go.

'fraid its not that simple...cd is first boot device, still get that message..enter system disk.
Also tried typing d:\setup.exe, e:\setup.exe, f:\setup.exe, from the a:\> prompt and get invalid drive specification every time...but it recognises the drives on start up i cant imagine theyre anything other that d e or f. Any ideas this has really got me stumped...i really wanna get this computer going - i'm on a p3 667 that shuts down every time i run media player so i want this computer running fairly soon. |

Try booting up with the floppy drive unplugged.
If the flat cable for the CD is an 80 wire(blue plug/gray plug/black plug), put the CD drive on the black plug and set the jumper on the drive to CS.

I unplugged the floppy drive and it made no difference. Set CD drive as you said and made no difference. Out of interest i set 1st 2nd and 3rd boot device to floppy and on load I told it to boot from floppy. THe system still tried to boot from the CD drive (Says "Boot from CD/DVD...") and came up with same "Disk Boot Failure. Insert system disk and press enter" when i get the command prompt up from the floppy the only drive it recognised is b: and a:. Is it likely the IDE on the motherboard is broken? despite bring brand new?

Putting my system together, I couldn't get my Windows XP Pro to install.
Took it to a local shop and the they said that I had a bad Windows CD. So, they the did the install no problems with their CD using my Key Code. May not be relevant to you, but just goes to show you.......

Well you may want to get that replaced because you may end up needing it later.

You need to recheck your optical drive cabling and jumpering - and make sure the IDE controllers are all turned on in the bios. It MUST boot from the CD to install Windows. Try ONE drive at a time.

Checked, rechecked tried 2 cd drives and a dvd/cd combo 1 at a time, so im sure it aint that.
Putting a Windows98 boot disk in just gets me a blinking cursor after verifying dmi pool data... no prompt. Also, i tried putting in a hdd with a working windows installation, but as soon as it got to the first windows loading screen the computer restarted. Does this mean there is somthing up with the computer or can you not just move a hdd with windows on like that to a new motherboard? Sorry to be a pain with all this but i really need to get this computer working soon and I cant work out *** is up with it. |

That still doesn't explain why the CD won't boot - unless you are using a burned copy that wasn't burned correctly.
