new build
I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks. This is my second build, but I'm still a newbie. My first build went together without a hitch, but this second one is driving me nuts. When I turn the power on, the fans work, the power lights come on, but nothing else works. The monitor remains blank, the cd drives and floppy don/t work. I've been reading through the threads of people who seem to have the same problem and tried all of the recommended fixes and nothing worked. I have:
ULTRA midtower case with an ULTRA 400/500 watt psu. +12v is 28A 336 watts ASUS motherboard with AMD 64 processor (754 socket) Memory is Corsaire 1 gig VS1GB400CS (verified on Corsair site as compatible woth mobo) Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis 256MB DDR memory Turtle Beach Montego DDL 7.1 surround sound card Seagate 250G ATA HD |

Did you go through the bare minimum build to make sure all your main parts are okay, as posted in THIS THREAD? If not, that's the best place to start.

If the system won't post with the bare minimum parts outside the case, you'll need to substitute parts to track down the problem. I would start with the power supply. Ultra's are low quality. Pick something from the good list here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 I would go with Antec, or FSP.

I tried a bare bones, outside the box again. Still power to the fans, but no picture on the monitor. I'll send for a new Antec power supply and start again. Thanks for the input. I'll let you know what happens.

I put in a new Antec Power supply (Smartpower 2.0 500 watt ATX12V ) Still no picture, no sound, no beeps, dead silence except the fans run. Would my next try be the RAM. The Corsair site said the ram i have is compatible with the mobo, but the user guide doesn't list it. I'll take the guide with me and get one on their list. Any brands I should stay away from? I usually order from New Egg or Tiger Direct, but I want to get this finished before school is out in June
. Closest comp store is 40 miles away so I hope the RAM works. Or do you have any other suggestions?

Corsair usually has really good memory, but any company can get a dud now and then. Before trying different RAM, have you taken the processor out and checked to make sure there aren't any pins that got bent when you installed it into the socket? I'd try that first, then the RAM. You did try re-seating the video card and ram into their slots to make sure they were all the way in, right? Sometimes those things can push pretty hard before they're all the way seated in the slot. Just don't push so hard you break the motherboard though.
![]() As for good brands of RAM: Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Mushkin, Geil and OCZ are one's I usually hear good things about. Have heard lately that Buffalo and G.Skill are good too. You should be able to find something in those brands.....other brands than these listed might be iffy on the quality. Last edited by juppy; 09-22-2006 at 11:29 PM. |

Tried all of that. Tried new RAM. One thing I did forget was that the power switch on the front of the case turns on the fans, but when I go to turn it off, it doesn't work, have to turn it off on the back of the case. I'm beginning to think I may have gotten a bad motherboard. Asus has been pretty good for me in the past. I'm in my 70's and just hope I have enough time left to figure this one out (LOL) My local guru is getting married tomorrow night so needless to say he has other things on his mind except my computer problems.

Fire it up out of the case with bare minimums and let it run for 5 minutes. Then feel the CPU heatsink, is it warm?
Which exact Asus motherboard and which exact processor, please? |

That means the motherboard is not starting - this is a bad motherboard or a bad CPU if you have tried a known good power supply and connected all the connectors. There is a 2x2 connector on the motherboard that has to be hooked up in addition to the main ATX connector.
Which EXACT Athlon 64, please? |
