Applying Thermal Compound
Can anyone walk me through the application of the thermal compound to the processor and bottom of fan/heatsink? Read the step in the guide but I'm a bit nervous...I assume the stock heatsink and fan for the conroe e6400 is already assembled, and I merely need to apply the compound directly to both the 'Copper Colored' bottom of fan/sink (the bottom of which also has three gray 'Pads'-I assume to be heat pads...furthermore I directly apply the compound to the top of the processor.
The e6400 did not come with any compound, this is 'Artic Silver 5' which I purchased myself... |

If the heatsink already has a thermal pad on it you don't need to apply thermal compound to anything. If you do apply thermal compound you'll actually see higher CPU temps because the compound plus the pad is too much material between the heatsink and the CPU and you get less thermal tranfer going on.

The arctic web states to remove the pads and then apply compound...Which is better for coolong?-the stock pads or the compound?

Arctic Silver would work slightly better, but if you remove the stock thermal pad you void the CPU 3 year warranty.

ive always wondered, how are they gonna tell how ive put a new heatsink on? If my 4200+ ever breaks down ill just wash of the old thermal compound and claim ive been using stock heatsink.

The absence of the stock thermal compound will be a dead giveaway that they can pick up on the first glance. Also claiming you were using the stock setup when you weren't is called fraud and is a crime.
