First build, everything works but the onboard audio, help?

This is my first build, so I may have made a very obvious mistake, but I am at a loss as to why I can't get any sound piping out of my new computer.

The motherboard is an asrock 939Dual-SATA2 ULi m1695 ... the manual can be found here: http://www.asrock.com/support/index_download.asp

I haven't run the CD1 cable from the DVD burner to the mobo, and I haven't plugged anything into the audio1 front panel audio header... but I don't think that is the problem, since I'm not trying to get audio input from that drive, and I'm using the audio output jacks attached the motherboard (they come out the back of the system). But I can't get ANY audio, and I've tried 2 sets of speakers. The OS is fedora 5, but I've also used a DamnSmallLinux liveCD and no sound there either...

If anybody knows what might be the problem I would appreciate your help. If I haven't included enough information here let me know and I'll do what I can to provide more.

Thanks for your help. I had overlooked the fact that my integrated sound card may not have been supported in any of those builds. I just got a new one (recognized by alsa) for ~$13 and it worked. Again, thanks.
