AMD AM2 Platform... should you really get Conroe?
As I approach the time I am about ready to buy, I am thinking back as to whether or not Conroe is the best choice right now. AMD's AM2 Platform seems like a wise choice also because eventually AMD will be coming out with processors that are quad cores and possibly ones that are better than the Conroes. I know that the Conroes are the better buy right now and Intel will also release new processors soon, but if I just need a computer for moderate gaming. will it make a huge difference? It seems cheaper to go AM2 at the moment.

I feel going with the Conroe right now would be the better choice. glc says the AM2 platform is very picky about the RAM you use and doesn't appear to be very stable yet.
But it's going to be your computer so go with what you feel most comfortable with...just make sure you do your research before you commit. Cricket

To say that am2 might be in the future is just like saying that intel might be better in the future.
K8L and am3 is too far away to make judgements. For the time being kentsfield and conroe will own the market for a while. Who's to say what intel might be coming out with next?

Well I didn't want to start a new thread, so I will make my request here. I have gotten some money and now want to start the initial ordering process. I am having a hard time putting together a complete system for under $1,000. That is the maximum budget and must include a monitor, os, keyboard, mouse, all the good stuff. I'd like a good gaming mouse. I just need it to run games well without ever lagging. The case I have chosen is the Aspire X-Plorer.
One more thing, should I really try to stretch for the e6300 and overclock it to about 2.4ghz? And what is the system bus, and how do I know what to put in when overclocking. Does this automatically change? I honestly have 2 main requirements: upgradability and it being an upgrade from \B/\E/\L/\O/\W/. Thanks so much in advance. Oh and by the way, this is the current budget, meaning it may increase. I'd just like to initially put some things together, then we'll move from there. By the way, I plan on making a worklog so new builders like myself can see how it's done. We'll see, though.

Cpu: Core 2 duo E6300 $183
Mobo: P5B Vanilla $146.99 Memory: 1GB Corsair XMS DDR2 675 $138.00 after $15.00 Mail-In Rebate Video/GFX: BFG 7600GT $113.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate Hdd: WD 160GB $64.99 Powersupply: Enhance 400W $56 Case: Pick your choice here, although some good brands to look out for is antec, codegen, coolermaster, aerocool, thermaltake, lian li, silverstone, sunbeam, chenming. Optical: Lite on dvdrw plextor and nec are also good brands. $31.99 Keyboard: Logitech for the keyboard, of your choice. Mouse: Its really hard to give a suggestion on this. Has everybody has different preferences here. Your best bet would go and try out some on your own and see what fits best. My suggestions for a gaming mouse are the Logitech G5 and the Razer Diamonback and Copperhead. Monitor: ViewSonic Q19wb 19'' $209.99 OS: Windows XP Home $87.99 Thats ~$1033 not including your choice of keyboard/mouse and Case. This is the bare minimum for a core 2 duo gaming build. |

Mr. F's parts list is a good one - though as you can see, a conroe build for $1000 including a good monitor is tough to get. A good motherboard like the P5B is expensive when compared to good motherboards on more mature sockets, like Intel 775 and AMD 939.
You say your budget may increase - in that case, I'd suggest holding off on buying parts until you have a couple of hundred more to spend. Increasing the RAM to 2GB, and the video card to an ATI X1900XT or similar, would make for a considerably better gaming computer, for comparatively little extra cash. You might also consider getting the Antec Sonata II case. Great case, and quality 450w power supply included. Might save you a bit of cash over getting the two separately. FK
