Upgrade Advice
Hey all,
I'm running a skt939 3500+ and a 6800gt right now and I am thinking about an upgrade to a 4800 X2, due to a great price on Newegg (~280). I definately want to upgrade to a dx10 card early next year and i was wondering if my 3500 might seriously bottleneck those dx10 cards. I don't have the money for a move to am2/core duo but I'd like to keep a fast machine until whenever am3 hits. Will I need to move up to something like the 4800 for nextgen cards and if not is it still worth it? Thanks |

AM2 i think, for the time being be pretty solid. as they jus came out with the X2 5000. but i wouldn't know, DX10 might be bottle necked by ur graphic card... but that has a few months in it at least. as DX10 won't come out for a bit more. and then Vista...

In my opinion DX10 is being a bit overhyped, and cards that will suit a purpose for everyday/casual gamers wont come out for a while. And by the time dx10 actually comes into full force, your card will be considered outdated.
Not only that the first cards, will be VERY power hungry and very expensive cards. And yes your current setup will probally bottleneck them. Not to mention early rumours that these cards will be taking 300W (rumours), meaning you'll need atleast a high qualiy 500-600W to just power one card and cpu with a little headroom. Save that money and use it to upgrade to a new platform (such as c2d) and get a budget gamer dx9 card. Or just continue with the 939skt, upgrade the cpu, get a little better card (7600gt?) and wait AM3 out. Because the DX10 cards themselves are being said to cost 600-700 bucks at release... Totally up to you, just my opinion..

That sounds good. Also, I am running two monitors-if i was to get, say a 7900gt, is it possible to have both cards running at the same time (obviously NOT in sli), with the new card running my gaming monitor and my old 6800gt powering the second monitor?
It seems like this would take some of the strain of running two monitors off of the newer card. I just love my 6800gt too much to toss it. My motherboard is an Asus A8n-sli deluxe. |
