first build

I am attempting my first build. I am having trouble with the front audio connectors. I am using a sound card (creative sound blaster live 24 bit) instead of the onboard audio. The mic plug ( for the front audio connectors) goes into a connector on the board and there are single pigtails that come off of the same harness that do not reach their respective pins on the motherboard. Do I need to get some extension harnesses for these wires or cut and splice them myself? Also should these be plugged into the sound card instead of the motherboard? There is an unused connector on the sound card but the instructions that came with it were pretty vague and none of the pins are labeled. Thanks

Asus M2N-SLI deluxe. AMD 4200 X2. msi 7600 gt. corsair xms 2GB ram. creative sb live 24 bit. seagate 250 sata 3.0 hd. Antec 2.0 500w ps. Antec super lanboy case. Hans G 19" LCD widescreen monitor. Logitec speakers.

For them to work, yes they need to go onto your actual working sound card. Check the manufacturers website for the manual there, sometimes if you bought OEM card, than you get a better description of the pinout on the online manual. See if there isn't a little more length on those wires tuched insise the front covre or perhaps wrapped around something, that are usually plenty long enough.
