Vista...Put it on your new build.

I've heard many people (some very experienced) saying that they are going to stay away from vista till the first SP, or about a year. Well I would like to pass on to them that I have been using vista, and office 2007, and the new microsoft OS and Apps are just beautiful. All of you building computers I recomened that you get the RC1, not only is it so much nicer than XP, but it will get you familiar with its setup. (its not hard to get familiar with it though, dont worry)

I assume people will reply to this post saying, beware of bugs, and also saying that the drivers aren't out yet. I've installed it on a system that is a few years old and I really havent had any issues with drivers yet. The only issue I've had is I don't know who makes my soundcard (its in my laptop), and I can't download the driver because I don't know what it is. All of my XP programs work, and run faster! I am yet to encounter a bug.

I say go for it...get the RC1...but in the end its your choice!

Pretty silly to advise someone to install RC1 on their computer. RC1 is not production software and will quit working sometime next year. You can try to make your case about Vista next year when Vista officially ships but right now installing RC1 on a production machine is not advised.

Yes, it is our choice.

I'll stick with WinXP simply because I'm not having any issues with WinXP. I'll move to Vista eventually, but not when it first comes out. Probably when the second service pack comes out.

I've installed it on a test system too and and no driver problems. But I'm still not going to use it. There are going to be huge problems with Vista, just like there are huge problems with every OS when it first comes out. XP works just fine for me, and Vista is hardly as fundamental a change as Windows 95 was compared to Windows 3.1.

I would have given it a trial run if it was a free download.

I know it's not expensive but still...it's not free and for now I have no issues with XP.

Yes, it's free as long as you have registered and gotten a key. However, it DOES expire in June 2007 and you MAY not be able to upgrade it in place to the final purchased version, you MAY have to reformat - nobody knows this for sure yet, but it HAS been the case in the past with Microsoft prerelease operating systems.

I followed the procedure to download RC1 and everything was going smoothly and I registered and received the emails etc...then I stopped...at the point where it trys to charge £6.49 :S

I'm starting to wonder now...prehaps I clicked on the DVD option which is what they are charging for.

I downloaded it and put it on a DVD, and have the key...I may put it on my older machine just to give it a whirl. Not sure when...I'll want to leave a whole afternoon or so to do it.

I don't even believe they'll have all of the glitches out of Vista until about 2010. Stick with XP. It's tried and true!

Whoa...£6.49. I think it might be $1.50 in US. I just order the disc as you get 10 licenses. Lol Ferrari, your so great, but win2k...i mean come on. Vista is great, and remember microsoft took some extra time to try and get rid of all the glitches (I'm sure they didn't but Vista is still beautiful). Plus it is faster.

(I have faith you will all be using Vista by mid 2007, enough people will tell you how great it is....)

ps. has anybody in here Actually used vista and noticed problems with it.

pps. Would you stick with a 64mb video card, and a really old processor because it is "Tried and True"

Excuse me - do NOT diss Windows 2000. It still serves a LOT of people just fine, and I'm one of those people.

The official policy of this forum is to discourage the use of prerelease or beta software on a production system. It is for TESTING purposes only. If you want to play with it, put it on a second computer or a different hard drive. It is not wise to put all your eggs in that basket.

If it gets the job done, ABSOLUTELY. I sure am - I have a P4-2.53 and a 128mb FireGL 8800, they do what I need just FINE.

I prefer it because it's a lot less bloated than XP, it doesn't come with a Fisher-Price interface, it doesn't keep popping balloons in my face, and it runs all my apps. It does what an operating system is supposed to do - it supports applications quietly. It is every bit as stable as XP, it's based on the same NT kernel. It's been on this machine for over 5 years now without a reformat, and it's been through several upgrades and a couple repair reinstalls (motherboard changes - before I found out about changing the IDE drivers first). I am not a gamer, but the few games I do have on it run fine - even with that workstation graphics card, it *is* a DX 8.1 card based on a Radeon 8500 core - and it does NOT use those awful Catalyst drivers.
