If you want to build a Conroe rig, just go for it...prices have come down quite a bit since launch.

i heard that quad core processors and mobos are expected to hit the market sometime early next year, so i would expect prices to drop around the time quad core processors are coming out.

I would think so. Shouldn't be any new mobos...I think all the Core 2 Duo boards *should* support it with a BIOS update. Don't quote me on that though.

But then again, isn't Core 2 Quad only going to be "Extreme Edition" CPU's? at least initially? (ie, $1000 CPU's) Even then, it should shift prices down a bit.

I wouldn't worry about when prices are going to be $5 cheaper, just go for it. It's not going to be any fun if you antagonize over a few bucks.

Conroe e6600 has been the fastest processor I've ever seen.

If your going for core2duo make sure you get a board that can upgrade to quatro cause you might want to eventualy do that, there's a list of currently available boards (some needing bios upgrades) on Anandtech that will support the quatros....

Thanks for the heads up on that article.

Also, it does look like the first Quad Core will be a "Extreme" CPU...so unless you plan on paying $1000+ for the processor alone, it's probably out of the question for a while.

found this on Intel's website about the quad cores. looks like they are planning on releasing the Kentsfield XE first with the cheaper Kentsfields (the one's that most of use will be able to afford) quad core processors after that, unfortunately they dont give expected release dates.

To be honest I really think quad core is very far off as far as usefullness is concerned. Not only are they expensive, they'll be taking more power, and producing more heat. If this with an advantage...then its worth it. But the only people that will benefit for quad core is the people who want to see an extra few points in 3Dmark or other benchmarks, or people who use one of the handful of applications that will reak the benefits of quad core.

One of those although being folding@home.

The motherboards that do/will support them are some of the 965 series. I know for a fact that P5B Deluxe is running alot of Kentisfields now..
