Amd
Hey guys, I think I want to go AMD for my new build. I have used a Core 2 Duo e6600 and it is blazing fast, but I have always wanted to try AMD as I have used Intel all my life. What would be a good choice in terms of a gaming computer? Would one of the AM2 Platform Opterons be a wise choice? Let me know your opinions in terms of CPUs. Thanks a lot.
I was thinking something like: 3800+ x2 Asus m2ne 1gb XMS2 xfx 7600gt Antec TPII 430w lite on w/ lightscribe 250gb seagate 7200.10 would be a perfect budget system, am I wrong? Would I really notice any slow downs in my simple everyday activities?

Despite being an AMD builder myself, I wouldn't build a new AMD system at the moment. Whilst the choices you've picked out are good for a mid-range system, the AM2 platform is just too buggy for me to recommend at the moment. If you're wanting to build AMD for experience, I'd recommend you wait until the AM2 platform is more mature.
Do you specifically need a second system right now? If so, then I'd be tempted to go for a Socket 775 Pentium D system with a budget 945G chipset motherboard that would allow future upgrade to Conroe. If you're wanting a system for gaming, you could do a lot worse than upgrade the graphics card in your Conroe system. FK

The Conroe system I have can't be used for gaming. I put Linux on it and I use it as a server. But thanks for the thoughts. I chose the motherboard, cpu, and ram because people say that it works fine.

Absolutely no problem with the parts you listed - on the AM2 platform, that's the combination I'd trust most.
What are you going to use this system for? If it's for gaming, I'd be tempted to suggest a more powerful video card, like the ATI X1900XT FK |

Just one game, Counter-Strike: Source, which with my 6600 already gives me 40-120fps. So I'm sure this will be decent.
