New build for around $1,000, need some suggestions.
My friend wants me to build him a computer for around a grand, just the tower, he already has everything else. He will want to game with this machine as well as do your other normal PC tasks. I have a pretty good idea of where the best value is for a hard drive, memory, optical drive, ect. But I need some suggestions for a good CPU (Intel) and motherboard that will work well together. I would like to use a dual core CPU if possible. Also looking for the best value video card, I was thinking this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130057 I have a 7800GT that I like so I am partial to nvidia, but also open to suggestions for ATI cards. Again just looking for where the best value for this money is at, thanks.

Here's what I would do:
Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 - I own one. They are very fast. --- $315 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 Asus P5B --- $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 Corsair XMS2 (2x1gb) --- $240 (after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 Sapphire ATI x1900xt 256mb --- $260 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102051 That's ~$950, but you still need a case, dvd drive, etc. If you can afford it I'd definately shoot for this build, and if not, downgrade to an e6400 processor.

Save a few bucks by getting the E6300 - shouldn't be tons slower (it's fast as it is), and will save $130 or so.
FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX500 - $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104934 Have your friend browse through some cases and find one he likes the looks of...

Alright here is what I got so far, the build will prob end up being closer to $1,200 but that’s ok with him.
Case – Lian Li PC-61 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811112025 Power Supply – Enermax Liberty 500W http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817194003 CPU – Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115004 Hard Drives – Seagate 7200.10 320 GB X2 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148140 Video Card – Sapphire X1900 or Evga 7900GTO, both seem like a great value so I don’t think I can go wrong either way here. http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814102051 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130065 Optical Drive – Lite-On DVD Burner with lightscribe http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106015 Floppy Drive – Sony So far this puts me at around $900, I am having a really hard time deciding on a mobo that is going to be fully compatible and not give me a headache setting up, once I decide on the mobo I will also just pick out a 2 GB ram set that matches the MB’s DDR2 standard, prob the Corsair XMS2. And then from there I will be pretty much done. Also the OS does not need to be included in this price so I don’t need to worry about that. So Any recommendations on a good Mobo/Memory combo? It seems that most of the reviews I read on newegg for boards that look nice are negative. |

Everything is good, I'd go for the Intel motherboard in my signature if your not overclocking, it was very easy to setup. Or if you cannot fit that into your budget I'd recommend the Asus P5B. Yes, get the Corsair XMS2. Anything over DDR2667 will be okay.

Don't forget to figure the cost of the OS into your list.
Xp Home OEM is usually around 90 bucks at newegg.

For $150 the P5B is a no brainer.

Either that, or people not researching the ram more carefully. The 965 chipset is a tad fussy there. You also have to bear in mind there's no native IDE support, that's a 3rd party controller in there. It seems to be okay for optical drives but I would not put an IDE hard drive in it.

If you go with an Intel C2D board, remember that those boards have low voltage memory parameters. Extremely fussy. Most of them are using 1.8V RAM. Also, just get a Silencer 470 PSU from PC Power & Cooling. You will never regret it.
